FOUNDATION SINGLE CROCHET (FSC)
For any project that requires a foundation row of all single crochets you can use Foundation Single Crochets. In other words, instead of making a series of chain stitches and then working a single crochet into each chain you work a series of FSC stitches.
To begin a Foundation Single Crochet row, Chain 2.
Insert hook into the second chain from the hook
yarn over and draw a loop through (2 lps on hook)
chain 1
(2 lps still on hook)
yarn over and draw through two loops to finish the foundation single crochet.
*
Insert hook into last chain made, yarn over and draw a loop through. (2 lps on hook)
Chain 1. (2 lps still on hook)
Yarn over and draw through two loops to finish the foundation single crochet.
Repeat from the asterisk * for as many stitches as you need for your project.

When choosing a tote bag or purse for your crochet projects... be careful to make sure your yarn will not be damaged by the closures. Zippers can snag yarn but are okay if you're careful. Velcro is not yarn friendly at all. It snags yarn in a way that disturbs the yarn fibers and can destroy a project in a hurry. If you want a bag that closes, snaps, flaps or magnetic closures are best.

Hi,
Saw your pattern online and think it is great. Just started back crocheting and I would love to make this dishcloth but smaller. If I chained 31 stitches instead of 41 would that work and how much smaller do you think it would be.
Thanks so much for your help.

As long as you make your foundation chain
a multiple of 3+2
you can make any size you want.
So you need at least 32 chains (3x10=30+2=32) to begin the smaller size.

RE: Graphing Pattern
In you last newsletter there was a request for you to write a pattern from a picture. I don't know about the sites you cited, but if the desired picture is scanned into a computer and printed on a graph paper, you have created your own graph - then just pick the crochet stitches you with to use. I did this and used hdc with puff stitches to create a very special afghan.

The Incident - True story about how God works
This is about my Father In Law, James Hamblin.
We asked for and received prayer from many of our crochet family after his accident and during his recovery process. For those who do not know, James fell in October causing multiple injuries which took months to overcome. He is home now and doing well.
This is his story!
If you don't believe in miracles,
read this, it will change your mind!

"Laughter is an instant vacation." - Milton Berle

Humor provides us with a valuable tool for
maintaining an inner strength in the midst
of outer turmoil. - Brian Deery
A mother was practicing the alphabet with her four-year-old son, Tommy. She showed him a picture of a truck and asked, "What is this?"
"A truck," Tommy replied.
Then she pointed to the letter T and asked, "What does it start with?"
"A key!" replied Tommy without hesitation.
One night, my five-year-old granddaughter, Reagan, had
a coughing fit. Her father, Quinton, got up and turned
on the light and asked her if she would like a drink of
water.
"No thank you," she answered.
"How about some cough medicine to help you sleep?" he
asked.
"I could sleep a lot better if you turned out the light,"
Reagan replied.
"Now, Mrs. Hansen, this may sting just a little," the
doctor said, as he prepared the syringe of antibiotic
and stepped forward to administer it.
The patient suddenly SCREAMED in agonizing pain and
crumpled to the floor!
The doctor picked her up and stated, "Mrs. Hansen, this
is ridiculous. I haven't even injected the needle yet."
"No, you haven't," cried Mrs. Hansen. "But you DID step
on my ingrown toenail!"
Mrs. Baker, a fifth grade teacher, observed a student in her class during a True/False test, flipping a coin and then choosing an answer.
Mrs. Baker thought to herself, "Hah! Norman didn't study again."
This answer selection method continued throughout the entire test.
After Norman was obviously finished, Mrs. Baker again watched Norman flipping the coin and continuing through the test a second time.
"Norman, what are you doing now?" asked Mrs. Baker.
Norman replied, "I'm doing what you always tell us to do! I'm checking my answers!"
An insurance agent was teaching his wife to drive when
the brakes suddenly failed on a steep, downhill grade.
"I can't stop!" she shrilled. "What should I do?"
"Brace yourself," advised her husband, "and try to hit
something cheap."
Two children ordered their mother to stay in bed one Mother's Day morning. As she lay there looking forward to breakfast in bed, the smell of bacon floated up from the kitchen.
But after a good long wait she finally went downstairs to investigate. She found them both sitting at the table eating bacon and eggs.
"It's a surprise for Mother's Day," one explained, "we decided to cook our own breakfast."
My Sunday school class of kindergartners was studying
the creation story. After several weeks, we were ready
to review.
"What did God make the first day?" I quizzed.
"The second day?"
They answered both questions correctly.
"And what happened on the third day?" I asked.
One little child, face shining with enthusiasm, exclaimed,
"He rose from the dead!"
A little girl was in church with her mother when she
started feeling ill. "Mommy," she said, "can we leave
now?"
"No," her mother replied.
"Well, I think I have to throw up!"
"Then go out the front door and around to the back of
the church and throw up behind a bush."
After about 60 seconds the little girl returned to her
seat.
"Did you throw up?" Mom asked.
"Yes."
"How could you have gone all the way to the back of
the church and returned so quickly?"
"I didn't have to go out of the church, Mommy. They
have a box next to the front door that says, 'For
the Sick.'
When Peters learned that he was being fired, he went to see
the head of human resources. "Since I've been with the firm
for so long," he said, "I think I deserve at least a letter
of recommendation."
The human resources director agreed and said he'd have the
letter that next day.
The following morning, Peters found the letter on his desk.
It read, "Jonathan Peters worked for our company for eleven
years. When he left us, we were very satisfied."
I have my own system for labeling homemade freezer meals.
Forget calling them "Veal Parmigiana" or "Turkey Loaf" or
"Beef Pot Pie."
If you look in my freezer you'll see "Whatever", "Anything",
"I Don't Know", and, my favorite, "Food". That way when I
ask my husband what he wants for dinner, I'm certain to
have what he wants."
Walking through the hallways at the middle school where I work,
I saw a new substitute teacher standing outside his classroom
with his forehead against a locker.
I heard him mutter, "How did you get yourself into this?"
Knowing that he was assigned to a difficult class, I tried to
offer moral support.
"Are you okay?" I asked. "Can I help?"
He lifted his head and replied, "I'll be fine as soon as I get
this kid out of his locker."

When I was working as a clerk at a sporting-goods store,
a woman came up to my register with a package of white
athletic socks. "Will you open this up so I can see how
the socks feel?" she asked.
Reluctantly I tore open the package, and she scrutinized
the merchandise. She handed me the package, saying, "I'll
take them."
Relieved, I started to ring her up, until she interrupted
me. "Can I have another pack? This one's been opened."
