CHAIN 1 SPACE (Ch-1 Sp)
Patterns sometimes
refer to a chain space.. it can be chain 1 or any number/series of chains.
Ch-1 sp is the same as chain one space.
Ch2-sp is the same as chain two space.
etc.
Example: If a pattern says "sc in next ch-1 sp" then you do
a single crochet in the next chain one space (the next space where you
previously chained one). Work the stitch into the hole below the chain...
not directly into the chain itself.

If you are a beginning crocheter you may have trouble remembering stitch abbreviations.
Make a "working copy" of your pattern (enlarge it if need be) and write notes in the margin about what the abbreviations mean.

Re: Help with Crochet stitches
Hello,
I was wondering if you could explain to me about doing a particular stitch.
The pattern is a Bernat Super Value Crochet Dog Coat
The stitch that I am having trouble understanding is
2 sc in first dc (Inc made).
I also was wondering if there is a place where I can get a list of stitches and pictures on how to do the stitches.
Thanks so much for your help.

This video shows how to make a single crochet (sc) stitch:
Each crochet stitch has two loops along the top edge.
The front loop is the loop closest to you.
The back loop is the loop farthest from you.
Unless a pattern specifically to work in the front or back loop
you would work into both of the top loops of the stitch.
For your instruction you would make two of the single crochet stitches into both of the loops at the top of the double crochet.
“Inc made” means you just made an increase.
I have a compilation of stitch information (some with video) on our Crochet Basics page:
http://www.crochetnmore.com/123basics.htm
I am always finding new things to include so if you have further questions just email me.
Re: ReadAPattern
I have a set of tunisian pattern instructions that state:
Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps] twice, [ch 1, y0, pull through 4 lps, ch 1, (yo, pull through 2 lps) 3 times ] across.
There are two sets of brackets. My question is regarding the word "across". Does the word across refer only to the second set of brackets OR is it saying to go back to the beginning and perform the entire set of instructions which would include both brackets
Thank you
Valerie

Ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps] twice, [ch 1, y0, pull through 4 lps, ch 1, (yo, pull through 2 lps) 3 times ] across.
That means you do this:
chain 1
[yarn over, pull through 2 loops
yarn over, pull through 2 loops ]
[ this is where the repeat begins
chain 1, yarn over, pull through 4 loops, chain 1
( yarn over, pull through 2 loops
yarn over, pull through 2 loops
yarn over, pull through 2 loops ) ]
Since the word “across” comes directly after the closing bracket ]
you only repeat everything inside those brackets across the row.

Re: ReadAPattern
Been searching all day for information on how to do a, "3dc between next two". I haven't been able to find a book on how to do this either. If you know of a good book I would be interested.
Here is how it read's; ch-3 space, 3dc between next two 3dc groups, ...........
Please help, Melissa.

Without the rest of the instruction I’m not sure what the designer wants
you to do with the “chain 3” .
This video shows how to work “between” stitches:
To work 3dc between the next two 3dc groups
means your working row has two sets of 3 double crochet stitches.
You need to work the 3 double crochet stitches in the space between the two sets of 3.... in between the posts of the last stitch of the first 3dc group and the first stitch of the next 3dc group.
Around the 1:00 minute section of this video:
I work 3dc between two groups of 3dc for the side of a granny square.
There are many crochet reference books available.
To help you decide which best suits your needs I recommend visiting a book store and browsing through their selection. Some books only provide basic stitch explanations while others explain how to combine stitches to form textured patterns.

ROWS 6 - 11: (REP ROWS 3, 4) THREE MORE TIMES...
This means you do the following:
Row 6 = Repeat Row 3
Row 7 = Repeat Row 4
Row 8 = Repeat Row 3
Row 9 = Repeat Row 4
Row 10 = Repeat Row 3
Row 11 = Repeat Row 4

DO I turn after chaining 1 or 4?? I don't have the pattern B/4 me on one of those rows you start out & it doesn't say turn!!! Please advise

Not all of the rows turn when you begin. Some time ago, another viewer verified the pattern is written correctly.

The Incident - True story about how God works
This is about my Father In Law, James Hamblin.
We asked for and received prayer from many of our crochet family after his accident and during his recovery process. For those who do not know, James fell in October causing multiple injuries which took months to overcome. He is home now and doing well.
This is his story!

A man is applying for a job as mechanic that he really wants
to get.
The boss says, "Can you roll your hard hat down your arm and
pop it back on your head?"
The mechanic nods, confused.
"Can you play light saber with your wrench and another man's
screwdriver?"
"Oh yes," says the mechanic.
"Can you bounce your screwdriver off the cement, grab it, whirl it around and put it in your belt like a gun?"
"Sir, I've been doing that for years!" says the wanna-be
mechanic.
"Well in that case, I can't use you. I have 12 men doing that already!" says the boss.
Little Johnny's mother was having difficulty gulping down
the birthday cake he had made for her as a surprise. When
she was finished, Little Johnny happily exclaimed,
"I'm so glad you like it, Mommy. There should have been 32
candles on the cake, but they were all gone when I took it
out of the oven."
Because I had forgotten the dates for a number of my
friends' and relatives' birthdays and anniversaries,
I decided to compile a list on the computer and have
the dates highlighted on screen when the machine was
turned on. I went to a number of computer stores to
find a software program that would do the job but had
no luck at the first few. I finally found one where
the clerk seemed experienced.
"Can you recommend something that will remind me of
birthdays and anniversaries?" I asked.
"Have you tried a wife?" he replied.
"Take a pencil and paper," the teacher said, "and write an essay with the title 'If I Were a Millionaire.'"
Everyone but Philip, who leaned back with arms folded, began to write furiously.
"What's the matter," the teacher asked. "Why don't you begin?"
"I'm waiting for my secretary," he replied.
While trying to explain to our six-year-old daughter how much technology had changed, my husband pointed to our brand-new personal computer and told her that when he was in college, a computer with the same amount of power would have been the size of a house.
Wide-eyed, our daughter asked, "How big was the mouse?"
The Fourth of July was coming up, and the nursery school
teacher took the opportunity to tell her class about
patriotism. "We live in a great country," she said. "One
of the things we should be happy is that, in this country,
we are all free."
One little boy came walking up to her from the back of
the room. He stood with his hands on his hips and said,
. . . "I'm not free. I'm four."
My sister Candice's husband drove right into a radar trap. And because Candice was following him in her car, the police officer nabbed her too.
After the officer had written up one ticket, he approached Candice. Her defense was that she was merely following her husband. When that appeal failed, she tried another tack:
"Do you give family discounts?"
The teacher was explaining to her 2nd grade class the
significance of Memorial Day, and they were preparing
some songs and stories to put on a little show for their
parents.
At one point the teacher pointed to the American flag
and asked, "Does anyone know what flag this is?"
A little girl called out, "That's the flag of our
country!"
"Very good!" the teacher said. "And what is the name
of our country?"
"Tis of thee," the girl said confidently.
Aboard a flight from L.A. to New York, Grandma Esther was taking her very first flight.
They had only been aloft a few minutes when the elderly lady complained to the stewardess that her ears were
popping.
The girl smiled and gave the older woman some chewing
gum, assuring her that many people experienced the same
discomfort.
When they landed in New York, Grandma thanked the
stewardess.
"The chewing gum worked fine," she said, "but tell me,
how do I get it out of my ears?"
A large, two-engined train was making its way across America.
While crossing the Western mountains, one of the engines broke
down. "No problem, we can make it to Denver and get a replace-
ment engine there," the engineer thought, and carried on at
half power. Farther on down the line, the other engine broke
down, and the train came to a standstill in the middle of
nowhere.
The engineer needed to inform the passengers about why the train
had stopped, and always trying to look on the bright side of
things, made the following announcement: "Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that
both engines have failed, and we will be stuck here for some time
until the additional engines arrive. The good news is that you
didn't take this trip in a plane!"
A manager has to take on some sport, at the advice of his doctor so he decides to play tennis.
After a couple of weeks his secretary asks him how he's doing.
"It's going fine", the manager says, "When I'm on the court and I see the ball speeding towards me my brain immediately says: To the corner! Back hand! To the net! Smash! Go back!".
"Really? What happens then?", the girl asks enthusiastic.
"Then my body says: Who? Me? Don't talk nonsense!".
At my parents' 60th wedding anniversary, my Dad told of how he
met Mom.
She was an underpaid teacher at a one-room school in rural Canada
and Dad was working on a nearby farm. One of the local boys had asked her to go to a movie. Dad was also going to the movie, and
had caught a ride to town with them.
At the theatre, the fellow paid for himself and walked in, leaving
Mom standing there with no ticket. She had no money with her, having assumed her date was paying her way.
Dad stepped up and paid for her ticket.
He said, "That was the best 50 cents I ever invested."
