Each chain has a top loop, a bottom loop and a "hump" on the back of the chain.
The hump of the chain is also known as the "back ridge".

Working into the hump of each chain along a foundation row makes the foundation edge

Re: ReadAPattern
Please explain "sl st across 2 shells working in pattern to within 2shells".
Thank you
<< reply >>
this means you work a slip stitch in the first two shells you made and then
continue working "in patttern" until you have two shells left at the other
end of the row.
Working "in pattern" means you continue making the same stitches you have
in previous rows.

Re: Error in Broomstick Square
How many squares do you need to make afghan?
Lori
<< reply >>
Many of my patterns are for afghan squares only.
I tend to leave the finishing techniques up to the individual crocheter.
You can assemble the squares using any method you choose.
Take a look at this page for joining methods:
http://www.crochetnmore.com/joiningsquares.htm
The number of squares needed for your afghan will depend on how large
your squares are as well as how large you would like your finished afghan.
For an afghan using the Broomstick Lace Afghan Squares, each finished square
measures 7” x 7”. A good size afghan using these squares might be made by
joining 72 squares.
8 squares wide (7" x 8 = 56" wide)
9 squares tall (7" x 9 = 63" tall )
The size of your finished afghan minus any joining width would be 56" x 63".
You can adjust the number of squares to achieve whatever size you want.
If you join your squares and see you want your afghan a little larger but
not as large as adding more squares... add a nice border to balance it out.

Re: Suggestion/Question
I would like to know how the size of bone hooks compare to aluminum hooks. I have some vintage patterns that call for a #8 bone hook. I have a few bone hooks that were my mom's but can find no size one them. How do I know what size they are.
I look forward to getting your answer on these.

You can size your hooks using a knitter’s gauge.
This page shows you how:

I can't remember how to use it to figure out what size needle to match the yarn you are using ..... something
about folding yarn in half (doubled) ? anyone know?

Karen: Most yarn labels list a recommended hook size. I don't recall seeing a way to determine which hook size
to use for a certain yarn other than guidelines like these:

Thank you so much! I have a question: I don't have a Kindle, so I sometimes download books to read using the Kindle for PC software that's free from Amazon. But how can I print a pattern from this software? I'm not seeing any options to do that. Thanks again.

You're very welcome. We are checking into this for you.

With the Kindle for PC program, you can copy and paste and then print.
Highlight the page you are interested in. Use your mouse and scroll down the page. Once highlighted, a bar will appear with the copy selection. Click on that. Then open your MS Word or word processing program and click on Paste or do a CTRL V. If the font is too small, then do a CTRL A to select the whole page and change the font to something larger. You can bold headings too, if you wish, and do any other formatting.
You will notice that at the bottom of the page is a two-line footer that has been added to the page. It provides the author of the book with the publication date, the name of the book and the location from where the page came from, the name of the publisher and that the book is a Kindle Edition. Amazon, of course, would like you to keep the footer with the page.
You can then print the page from your word processing program.

Thank you so much! I'll try this with your "Two Afghans, a Scarf & a Cape eBook" today. I understand Amazon's reluctance to let their publications go uncredited, and I appreciate that they shared this info with us-especially
since I keep getting error messages when I try to open Kindle books in the Amazon cloud player. I'm now a Crochetnmore fan!

Re: Table Runner Pattern
Hi Lisa! I have written to you before about this pattern and I am still making them! My mother-in-law is Old Order Amish and she loves those that I have made for her! She uses some on the arms of upholstered chairs, like recliners .
I am making a baby yellow now and plan to run pastel satin ribbon through the spaces for Easter!!
Thanks again and God Bless!! ~Karen Miller in Ohio

This book
is a wonderful addition to any crochet library.
I've had numerous requests over the years of what to crochet for
boys.
Crobots are definitely the answer!
This 96-page book is filled with numerous types of Crobot patterns
as well as well-illustrated instructions for the
crochet stitches, assembly stitches and other embellishments used
in the patterns.
The patterns are well written, some of the book is written in a
small font but the pictures are wonderful. NOTE:
This book comes to you with a safety warning regarding the small
parts used in the patterns.
Therefore, please use your own discretion as to the age of the child
you intend the gift for.

"Laughter is an instant vacation." - Milton Berle
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The newlywed wife said to her husband when he returned from work, "I have great news for you. Pretty soon we're going to be three in this house instead of two."
The husband started glowing with happiness. Kissing his wife, he said, “Oh, darling, I'm the happiest man in the world."
But then she said, "I'm glad that you feel this way because tomorrow morning my mother is moving in with us."
Caden, 5, is enjoying kindergarten, but he is
exhausted by the time he gets home at 4 p.m.
He lives in the country and is the third child
on the bus at 7 a.m. and almost the last one
off at night.
When his grandmother asked him if he minded the
long bus ride he told her, "I like the bus. I
just don't like that it has to stop at everybody's
house!"
After shopping at a busy store, another woman and
I happened to leave at the same time, only to be
faced with the daunting task of finding our cars
in the crowded parking lot.
As we stood in the lot, looking around and around,
my car horn beeped, and I was able to locate my
vehicle easily.
"Wow!" the woman said, "I sure could use a gadget
like that to help me find my car."
"Actually," I said. "My gadget is called 'Gene'...
my husband, who's waiting in the car."
Ronnie goes down to the barber shop. He gets his hair
cut and then he is getting a shave. After being nicked by the
barber several times Ronnie says, "Hey buddy,
have you got an extra razor?"
The barber replies "Well yes sir I do,
would you prefer shaving yourself?"
Ronnie said, "Well not exactly but I thought I could defend myself."
While waiting in line at the bank, a coworker developed a very loud case of hiccups. By the time he reached the teller's window, the hiccups seemed to have worsened.
The teller took my friend's check and proceeded to run a computer verification of his account. After a minute she looked up from her terminal with a frown and said that she would be unable to cash his check.
"Why not?" my friend asked incredulously.
"I'm sorry, sir," she replied, "but our computer indicates that you do not have sufficient funds to cover this amount. As a matter of fact," she continued, "our records show your account overdrawn in excess of $5000."
"It can't be!" he cried. "You've GOT to be kidding!"
"Yes, I am," she answered with a big smile, counting out his cash. "But you'll notice that your hiccups are gone."
During a recent password audit by a company, it
was found that an employee was using the following
password:
"MickeyMinniePlutoHueyLouieDeweyDonaldGoofySacramento"
When asked why she had such a long password, she
rolled her eyes and said, "Hello! It has to be at least
8 characters long and include at least one capital."
While replacing some roof tiles, my friend fell from a
ladder. His ankle broken, he called out for help - and
his neighbor's four-year-old came to his side.
"Don't worry," she said, disappearing into her house.
Minutes later she returned in her nurse's outfit,
carrying a medical bag.
"Can you tell me who made you?" the pastor asked
the small boy.
The youngster thought a moment. Then he looked up
at the pastor and said, "God made part of me."
"What do you mean, part of you?" asked the pastor.
"Well," answered the boy, "God made me little. I
grew the rest myself."
Three-year-old Zoe watched her father Phil working
in the garden.
"What are you doing, Daddy?" she asked.
He replied, "I'm making a flower bed."
Soon Zoe started digging in the dirt, prompting Phil
to ask, "And what are you doing?"
Zoe replied, "I'm making pillows and blankets."
Just after we returned from our honeymoon, my husband decided
to get our affairs in order. I realized married life would take
some getting used to when I overheard him on the phone. "Hi,"
he said, "I just got married, and I'd like to put my girlfriend
on my insurance."
In church this past Sunday, we celebrated Communion.
During the "children's sermon", the minister was talking
about Communion and what it is all about.
"The Bible talks of Holy Communion being a 'joyful feast'. What does
that mean?
Well, 'joyful' means happy, right? And a feast is a meal. So a 'joyful
feast' is a happy meal. And what are the three things we need for a
happy meal?"
My son blurted out, "Hamburger, fries, and a regular soft
drink?"
A little girl asked her mother for a dollar to give to an old lady in the park. Her mother was touched by the child's kindness, and gave her the dollar.
"There you are, my dear," said the mother. "But, tell me, isn't the lady able to work anymore?"
"Oh yes," came the reply. "She sells candy."
