SHELL STITCH (abbreviations vary)
A Shell Stitch just means that more than
one stitch (such as a double crochet)
is worked in the same space.
Example:
If a pattern calls for a 5 dc shell then you work 5 dc into the specified stitch.
If a pattern calls for a 9 tr shell then you work 9 tr into the specified stitch.

Your crochet tension can differ from one project to another.
Therefore, it's best to make a gauge swatch before each project
if the project is size sensitive.

Subject: Bands in crochet patterns?
I am hoping you can help me as I have looked all over the internet and can't find what they mean by this term. I am using a very pattern book that was my mom's from 1946. The piece is a baby jacket. I have it all completed except for finishing the ends of the sleeves. The sentence makes no sense to me as I don't know what I am supposed to do. It says"Attach yearn to sleeve edge and work a s c-band, 1 inch deep, easing in the sleeve so that a double band measures 3 inches. Press through damp cloth" I can't seem to find out what they mean by band also if it is only 1 inch deep how do you get a double band 3 inches? All my older female relatives that crocheted are gone and I live in a very rural area and have no one to ask. It is for my grand nephew. I am hoping you can help. Thanks, Donna Naumec

Older patterns can definitely be confusing... congratulations on getting
this far with your pattern.
-------------------------
"Attach yearn to sleeve edge and work a s c-band, 1 inch deep, easing in the sleeve so that a double band measures 3 inches. Press through damp cloth"
I can't seem to find out what they mean by band also if it is only 1 inch deep how do you get a double band 3 inches?
-------------------------
The first part of this instructions means you attach the yarn to the edge of the sleeve in order to work the band.
To work a sc band 1 inch deep you crochet evenly in single crochet stitches around the sleeve opening and continue for enough rows to measure 1 inch.
The part of the instruction that says “easing in the sleeve” was a bit vague to me at first.
Normally when you ease in a sleeve you are to manipulate the stitches to help the sleeve attain a certain shape.
I have heard of easing in a sleeve when it is joined to the body of a garment... but not when it comes to making a band/cuff.
Now to this instruction: “so that a double band measures 3 inches”
I believe how the designer chose to word this is confusing but I interpret this as once the 1-inch band is finished, when you lay it flat which will
be a double thickness or “double band” it should measure 3 inches wide and 1 inch deep.
In this case, I believe the designer wants “ease” in the sleeve by working increases or decreases in order to get the correct width measurement of 3 inches.
Pressing through a damp cloth would block the band so you could get an accurate measurement.

In you pattern what is tr.?
Lorraine
<< reply >>
TR is a
Triple or Treble Crochet Stitch
Here’s how:
Yarn over twice, then insert your hook into the stitch or space indicated.
Yarn over and pull up a loop. (4 loops on hook.)
Yarn over and draw through 2 loops. (3 loops on hook.)
Yarn over and draw through 2 loops. (2 loops on hook.)
Yarn over and draw through two loops.
Here’s a Video:
Enjoy the pattern.
HI:
I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME, SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH. I NEED TO KNOW WHATS THE DIFERENCE BETWEEN DC IN EACH ST AND DC IN EACH ST TO CH ONE SP....THANK YOU
Rosana
<< reply >>
Your English is perfect.
DC IN EACH ST
means you work a double crochet in each stitch on the row/round.
DC IN EACH ST TO CH ONE SP
means you only work a double crochet in each stitch on the row/round
up to the point where you encounter a chain one space... then continue
with the next instruction.
Does that make sense?
Re: BridalHankie
Do you happen to know if the hankie (once completed) is washable?
Will it shrink or are there special instructions for cleaning??
Thank you
Michelle
<< reply >>
The hankie is made with cotton thread so it is washable.
In order to keep the hankie looking nice, I recommend hand washing,
press out excess water with a towel and lay flat to dry.
If you choose to machine wash and dry the hankie, wash it using
the gentle cycle in a lingerie bag and dry on low heat... because
cotton will shrink if dried on high heat.
Re: BridalHankie
I had a question about the border. When you say * Ch 3, Do not turn, sk next row or st, sc in end of next row or st. where do you mean that I go with this?? Am I going around the side of the hankie?? This is my 1st time trying your pattern.
Thanks,
Michelle
<< reply >>
The border is worked all the way around the hankie.

RE: BRIDAL HANKIE CROCHET PATTERN
I have made the bridal crochet pattern and it is completely square. I thought I followed the instructions correctly. The picture isn't square. Can you tell me what I did wrong to correct it, please?

I've crocheted the Alphabet Blanket you have in your cover photo! Several of them to be exact! One of my favorite baby gifts to make. I even adapted it for numbers. Thank you for the great pattern!

That's wonderful. I can't take credit for that pattern... I was given permission to repost it to my site years ago... it was on a yarn label.

This book
is a wonderful addition to any crochet library.
I've had numerous requests over the years of what to crochet for
boys.
Crobots are definitely the answer!
This 96-page book is filled with numerous types of Crobot patterns
as well as well-illustrated instructions for the
crochet stitches, assembly stitches and other embellishments used
in the patterns.
The patterns are well written, some of the book is written in a
small font but the pictures are wonderful. NOTE:
This book comes to you with a safety warning regarding the small
parts used in the patterns.

"Laughter is an instant vacation." - Milton Berle
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
A young boy gave some serious advice to his little
sister. He told her, "When you need help from our
parents, don't ever tell them you made a mistake.
Instead, say you want to talk to them about a recent
learning experience. You get into much less trouble
that way!"
A young boy came to Sunday School late. His teacher
knew that he was usually very prompt and asked him
if anything was wrong.
The boy replied no, that he was going fishing but
his dad told him that he needed to go to church.
The teacher was very impressed and asked the boy
if his dad had explained to him why it was more
important to go to church than to go fishing?
The boy replied, "Yes he did. Dad said he didn't
have enough bait for both of us."
After tucking their three-year-old child, Tyler, in
for bed one night, his parents heard sobbing coming
from his room.
Rushing back in, they found him crying hysterically.
He managed to tell them that he had swallowed a penny
and he was sure he was going to die.
No amount of talking was helping.
His father, in an attempt to calm him down, palmed a
penny from his pocket and pretended to pull it from
Tyler's ear.
Tyler was delighted.
In a flash, he snatched it from his father's hand,
swallowed, and then cheerfully demanded, "Do it again,
Dad!"
We purchased an old home in Northern New York State from two
elderly sisters. Winter was fast approaching and I was
concerned about the house's lack of insulation. "If they
could live here all those years, so can we!" my husband
confidently declared.
One November night the temperature plunged to below zero,
and we woke up to find interior walls covered with frost. My
husband called the sisters to ask how they had kept the
house warm. After a rather brief conversation, he hung up.
"For the past 30 years," he muttered, "they've gone to
Florida for the winter."
Catching her in the act, I confronted our 3-year-old
granddaughter,
"Are you
eating your little sister's
grapes?" I demanded.
"No," she innocently replied, "I'm helping her share."
My son David had just turned eight and was old enough to go
fishing at the local fishing hole on his own. While he loved
fishing, he knew little about how the fish got from the pole
to the table.
One day I arrived home to find a note he'd left on the
counter: "I caught three fish. Can you peel them for me?"
I live in a semi-rural area. We recently had a new neighbor
call the local township administrative office to request the
removal of the Deer Crossing sign on our road.
The reason: "too many deer were being hit by cars"
and he didn't want them to cross there anymore.
A wealthy woman is giving a garden party with several well-to-do guests attending.
During the festivities, two gardeners are out on the back lawn working.
As a guest watched.. one gardener was busy weeding when the other suddenly leaped high into the air, spun about, and gracefully swirled.
Taken by his grace, the guest remarked to the host, "That man is such a talented dancer, I'd pay him $500 to dance at my next party!"
When the host asked the first gardener about such an arrangement, he yelled, "Hey Louie! Do you think for $500 you could step on that rake again?'
"WHERE is my SUNDAY paper?!"
The irate old lady calling the newspaper
office, loudly demanded to know where
her Sunday edition was.
"Madam", said the newspaper employee,
"today is Saturday. The Sunday paper is
not delivered until tomorrow, on SUNDAY".
There was quite and long pause on the
other end of the phone, followed by a ray
of recognition as she was heard to mutter,
"Well, darn, that explains why no one was
at church just now."
Proper attire is required in the cafeteria at the University
of Maine. To enforce that rule, the management posted this
notice: "Shoes are required to eat in this cafeteria." Next
to it, a student added, "Socks can eat wherever they want."
My 12 year old daughter asked me, "Mom, do you have a
baby picture of yourself? I need it for a school project."
I gave her one without thinking to ask what the project was.
A few days later I was in her classroom for a parent-teacher
meeting when I noticed my face pinned to a mural the students had created.
The title of their project was: "The oldest thing in my house."
A man, in a hurry taking his eight-year-old son to school,
made a turn at a red light where it was prohibited.
"Uh-oh, I just made an illegal turn!" the man said.
"Aw, Dad, it's okay," the son said. "The police car right
behind us did the same thing."
