Owl Towel Topper Free Crochet Pattern

The following pattern is my original design.
Please only copy or print this pattern for personal use.
Please contact me if you find any errors.

MATERIALS:

Red Heart Super Saver-4ply worsted weight (White - less than 1-1/2 oz)
Hook Size F, G
Steel Hook Size 7 (to make the holes for the base row)

Dish Towel (only 1/2 the towel is needed for the topper)
2-1" buttons
Coordinating thread
Sewing Needle

Stitches: ch, dc, hdc, sc, sc2tog, sl st.

Difficulty: DIFFICULT

PREPARE TOWEL

Fold towel in half with short ends together and cut along the folded edge.

BASE ROW

Note: To help evenly space the sts on this row, lay your towel flat and place a piece of masking tape just below where your stitches will be. Mark the stitch placement on the tape and then remove it when this row is complete.

R1: Working along the cut edge, make the first hole using the steel hook near the edge on the right side approximately 3/4-1" from the cut edge. Fold the cut edge toward the back side of the towel while tucking the corner in toward the left to secure it. With a slip knot on the F hook, insert the hook into the hole you made, yo, pull up a lp, yo, draw through both lps to complete the first sc. This stitch may need adjusting to be sure the edge of the towel is secure.

Continue making holes evenly across the towel so you have 43 stitches when the base row is finished. Remember to fold the towel as you go to hide the cut edge as you work one sc in each hole made. At the end, put the last sc as close to the edge as the first one was, being careful to tuck/fold the corner inward to secure it.
