YARN SUBSTITUTION
VIEWER STITCH QUESTION
I'm sure you've been asked a thousand times, but can you tell me if I can use 2 strands of worsted weight yarn instead of 1 strand of bulky yarn? I have a load of worsted yarn, but no bulky and I' like to use it up. Thanks so much for you newsletter. I've been able to use sooo many of your patterns
NANCY
ANSWER
It’s always a challenge to find patterns that call
for the exact type of yarn we have on hand.
As far as substituting yarns goes:
This page offers tips (even though they mention knitting)
on substituting yarn:
http://www.ehow.com/how_5864699_substitute-
weight-yarn-bulky-yarn.html
Sandra posted on the following page that you
can substitute two strands of worsted weight yarn for
one strand of bulky yarn:
http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/charts_only.htm
However, in my experience, all worsted weight yarns
are not created equal. For example, Red Heart Worsted Weight
Yarn and Carol Simply Soft Worsted Weight Yarn vary in size...
I think Red Heart is thicker.
I recommend you take a look at the information on this page:
http://www.knitting-naturally.com/yarn-comparison-chart.html
I think this will help you determine which size yarn
is appropriate for your project.
Keep in mind... if your project isn’t a wearable or an item that
needs to be a specific size then the gauge really doesn’t matter
that much. If the intended project is a wearable, I suggest you make
a gauge swatch to be sure the yarn you use will yield the correct
number of stitches.

I'm really hoping you can help me. It seems that crocheting is a dying art in my circle of friends and I'm trying to make an afghan that resembles log cabin quilt squares for my boyfriend's upcoming birthday. I'm presently stuck on the instruction that tells me to, 'join with slip st in first ch-3 sp: 7 sc and 8 sps." It's the "7 sc and 8 sps" portion of the instructions that is confusing me.
Can you possibly be of any help? I appreciate your time.
Gratefully,
Adrienne Burke
<< reply >>
>>ch-3 sp: 7 sc and 8 sps
Once you join in the ch-3 space you should have
7 single crochet stitches and 8 spaces where you made one or more chains.
That is a reference to help you make sure you have the correct stitch
count up to that point.

You're very welcome Filomena... hope you enjoy the pattern.
I have many other free patterns available also... I just finished
one for a rug that only uses scraps... I used a lot of mine making
it :)
Hi from a beginner,
Just a quick comment and a question. I wish more people would explain the stitches a little more plainly like you just did in this page. It really is starting to make sense although I am still having problems, (my age I guess, ha,ha) I need to be able to see it done before I can actually learn it. My question is: Is there anyone who has actually made a video of all of the stitches and explained them?? I would quickly buy a copy of it. I would love to learn to know some things too, but can't understand the stitches either. I have the needles but can only do the beginning of knitting, (where it is the simple yarn over on the needle and you keep turning your needle and starting over on the other needle.) I don't know how to bind off or read a knit pattern, actually as I said before, I don't know how to read a crochet pattern either but I am determined to learn. Anyway, thanks for all the great information.

<< reply >>
I’m so glad you are determined to learn crocheting and knitting.
I’m sure there are videos you can purchase... but you can view
stitches on youtube for free. I know a lady named Theresa
has posted many crochet videos.
Knitting isn’t as difficult as it seems either... once you understand
where your yarn should be for either the knit or purl stitch.
I’m glad my Crochet Basics page has been helpful to you.

HELLO FROM ALASKA,
I NEED HELP WITH UNDERSTANDING A HAT PATTERN. I'M TRYING TO MAKE A
HAT IN THE ROUND, I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO DO (2 DOUBLE
CROCHETS IN THE NEXT STITCH. I KNOW HOW TO MAKE A DOUBLE STITCH. DO
I GO UNDER THE TWO STITCHES ( THE V IN THE STITCH, OR DO I SOMEHOW
MAKE ANOTHER DOUBLE IN THE THE FIRST DOUBLE STITCH. COULD YOU SHOW
ME HOW WITH A PICTURE. ALSO MY HAT IS TURNING INTO A BOWL TO SOON IS
MY TENSION TO TIGHT?
THANK YOU SO MUCH,
MARIA
<< reply >>
If your instruction says to work 2 double crochets in the next stitch
you will work both stitches into the very next stitch... under both loops
of the stitch unless otherwise indicated.
Your tension shouldn't change the shape of the hat... only the size.
Is your hat pattern online?
Re: Dawn's_Scarf
I was wondering if you could use Red Heart Super saver for both colors? Also could you just continue and make 44 rows instead of making 2 separate pieces. I like the pattern and was looking for something for the Special Olympics. Thank you
Karen
<< reply >>
Yes you can use two colors of the same kind of yarn.
You can make one long panel but the pattern design
will be different on each side when worn.
The reason I made two panels was to keep the spiked
stitches facing the same way when worn.
I have not found a mistake but I am confused about the change from the first 60 rows and the chain 12. I have crochet for over 60 years and something just doesn't click here. I really want to make this item When it says to move marker to opposite side of this row. This is when I am not sure what to do. Any help you can give me would be good. My son broke his left ankle and needs a cover for it so he can work and keep it warm thank you Beverly
<< reply >>
For Round 61... fold the stocking flat and put the marker on the
end opposite where your hook is... this is to help you keep track
of where the heel is. Now make the 12 chains and continue that
round.
Sorry to hear your son broke is left ankle... good job thinking to
cover it with a stocking!
RE: Frustrating Crocheting!
I have booked myself into a crochet course which starts in February, 2011.
Hopefully, then I will be able to understand...as I have bought a few different types of crochet books like, flowers, amigurumi etc..
In the meantime, apart from an assortment of hooks and yarn, would there be anything else I'd need to start me off?
Thanks for all your help,
Jodi xox
<< reply >>
I hope you enjoy your crochet course.
Learning to crochet is easy if you start with the
very basic stitches.
I have many stitch abbreviations and instructions on
my Crochet Basics page:
http://www.crochetnmore.com/123basics.htm
You do not have to know all of them... the very basic
stitches are a chain, single crochet, half double crochet,
double crochet, treble crochet and slip stitch. If you learn
these you can make many nice crocheted items.
Do you have a certain pattern you would like to make?
Subject: Stitch_Question
HOW DO YOU GET ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS. I ONLY CAN PRINT THE PAGE SHOWING.
Frances
<< reply >>
You might copy and paste the information you want to print
into a word program and print it from there.
When you click to print a page, everything should print on that page
unless it is set up otherwise. My pattern pages are set up so you
have the option to only print the pattern... this saves ink by not printing
the ads we feature on the pages.
Just curious... which page did you want to print?
Kind
words can be short and easy to speak,
but their echoes are truly endless.

This book
is a wonderful addition to any crochet library.
I've had numerous requests over the years of what to crochet for
boys.
Crobots are definitely the answer!
This 96-page book is filled with numerous types of Crobot patterns
as well as well-illustrated instructions for the
crochet stitches, assembly stitches and other embellishments used
in the patterns.
The patterns are well written, some of the book is written in a
small font but the pictures are wonderful.
NOTE:
This book comes to you with a safety warning regarding the small
parts used in the patterns.
Therefore, please use your own discretion as to the age of the child
you intend the gift for.
I have to tell you about this new book.
SweaterBabe.com's Fabulous & Flirty Crochet
I'm so happy to have it in my crochet library.
Katherine Lee has an eye for style and a definite knack for creating
beautiful crochet patterns.
I was really happy with the large colorful project photos.
There's something for everyone!
The aspect of Fabulous and Flirty Crochet that stood out to me was
the section on the yarns
used in the patterns. One page shows "actual size" photos
of the yarns which makes it super
easy to substitute other yarns if you want to. For those who stay
strictly to the recommended
yarn in a pattern Katherine has included a yarn resource list. The
projects are very fashionable
and perfect for gift giving... though I'm sure you'll have to make
something for yourself :o)
I can't wait to try the Flirty Skirt and the Ruffled Strap Tank.

"Laughter is an instant vacation." - Milton Berle

My sister bought her five-year old daughter,
Rebecca, a hamster.
One day he escaped from his cage. The family turned
the house upside-down and finally found him.
Several weeks later, while Rebecca was at school, he
disappeared again. My sister searched frantically, but
sadly, never found the little critter. Hoping to make the
loss less painful for Rebecca, my sister took the cage
out of her room.
When Rebecca came home from school that afternoon,
she climbed into her mother's lap.
"We have a serious problem," she said. "Not only
is my hamster gone again, but this time he took his cage
with him."
A man walks into a New York bank, and says he's going to Europe
for two weeks and needs to borrow $5000. For collateral,
he offers his new Rolls Royce.
The bank is satisfied and parks it in their secured underground
garage. Two weeks later to the day, the man returns to the bank,
repays the $5000 and interest of $15.41.
The loan officer says inquiringly, "Sir, we were delighted to
have your business but, in checking your credit, we learned you
are a multimillionaire. Why ever did you need to borrow $5000?"
"Where else in New York can I park my car for two weeks for
$15.41?"
My husband was describing our upcoming holiday
at a resort to our four children, aged three to nine.
It was at a place where the beds would be made,
he told them, the meals would be cooked, and all
the cleaning would be done for us.
Our oldest looked puzzled. "Then what's Mommy
coming for?" he asked.
The kid had swallowed a coin and it got stuck in his
throat, and so his mother ran out in the street yelling
for help. A man passing by took the boy by his
shoulders and hit him with a few strong strokes on
the back, and so he coughed the coin out.
"I don't know how to thank you, doc...", his mother
started.
"I'm not a doctor", the man replied, "I'm from the IRS".
Dr Gordon was a guest at a chic gathering, and his hostess
naturally broached the subject in which he was most at ease.
"Would you mind telling me, Doctor," she asked, "how
you detect a mental deficiency in somebody who appears
completely normal?"
"Nothing is easier," Dr Gordon replied. "You ask him a
simple question which everyone should answer with no
trouble. If he hesitates, that puts you on the right track."
"What sort of question?" asked the hostess.
"Well, you might ask him, 'Captain Cook made three trips
around the world and died during one of them. Which one?' "
The hostess thought a moment, then said with a nervous
laugh, "You wouldn't happen to have another example
would you? I must confess I don't know much about
history."

A carpenter was giving evidence about an accident he
had witnessed. The lawyer for the defendant was trying to
discredit him and asked him how far away he was from the
accident.
The carpenter replied, "Twenty-seven feet, six and

"What? How come you are so sure of that distance?"
asked the lawyer.
"Well, I knew sooner or later some idiot would ask me, so
I measured it!"
I come from a large family, five sisters and three brothers.
My sisters and I were looking through the family photo album
one day. Picture after picture, we were all dressed in
matching clothes. I asked my mother why she dressed us all
alike, right down to the baby.
She explained, "When we had just four children, I dressed
you alike so we wouldn't lose any of you. Then," she added,
looking at the pictures in the album, "when the other five
came along, I started dressing you alike so we won't pick up
any that don't belong to us."

The second grade daughter of a co-worker of mine
often reads books that are meant for older children.
Her mother wondered if she actually understood these
books, so she read half of one herself and then asked
her daughter what it was about.
Pleased by the well-informed response, she handed the
book back.
The next day after school, the child returned home and
proudly presented the book to her mother. "It was due
today," she said, "but I told the librarian you hadn't finished
reading it and asked if I could keep it for another week."
