HUMOR
Dear Subscriber:
I'm sending this issue out a bit earlier than usual.
Happy Halloween
A little added humor for this issue:
This past Sunday we missed church because Haley had the earache and I'd been feeling a bit under the weather. I had taken Haley to the doctor that morning and on the way home we stopped at the grocery to get her some ice cream. Mom Called my cell phone while I was in the check-out lane to tell me to be careful coming home. She told me there were 2 cows, a calf and a bull in my yard.
I came home and grabbed my camera.
Hubby said he felt like we were in a Gateway commercial :o)

" For you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. For this reason it says 'Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.' "
Ephesians 8-14
"How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! O Lord, they walk in the light of Thy countenance."
Psalm 89:15
"You are the light of the world, A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
Matthew 14-16
"And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb."
Revelation 21:23
"WHEN YOU ARE WALKING WITH CHRIST, OTHERS WILL SENSE THAT HE IS WITH YOU."
This quote is from Our Daily Bread - October, 2002 Issue.

PUMPKIN PATCH
A woman was asked by a co-worker,
"What is it like to be a Christian?"
The co-worker replied, "It is like being a pumpkin.
God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and
washes all the dirt off of you. Then he cuts off the
top and scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the
seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc., and then He carves
you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of
you to shine for all the world to see."

CROCHET STITCH, TECHNIQUE or TIP
(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)
If you know of any stitch I have omitted from our basics pages please drop me a line.
How about the best/tidiest ways to finish off? Thanks!
Courtesy of Heather Brown from Detroit, MI
To finish off... cut the yarn leaving a 3-4 inch tail. Then pull the
yarn tail through the last part of the stitch. This will secure it.
Now comes that pesky task of weaving in the yarn tails.
There are two methods I use regularly:
1. Crochet over the yarn end.
As you continue the project place the yarn tail across the top of the stitches you are working into. To make it extra secure work over the tail for 4-5 stitches then weave the yarn tail back and forth through each step of the next stitch to get it to the top of the row, drop the tail and crochet back over it when you come back for the next row.
2. Use a tapestry needle.
Thread the yarn tail into a tapestry needle and sew the strand back into the work. Sew in one direction for about 2 inches and then sew back in the same direction. This helps the yarn stay secure.
Be careful to sew into the base of the stitches so the yarn tail doesn't show.
The following page shows you how to weave ends with a yarn needle:
http://crochet.about.com/hobbies/crochet/library/bl_weave_ends.htm
Even with the best weaving technique some yarn tails will unravel at times.
It's best to launder the finished product on a gentle setting also as the
aggitating action of the washing machine can work the ends loose.

Hi!
I downloaded your dog sweater pattern last week and it is fantastic! I crocheted (in an evening) a sweater for my Jack Russell Terrier. As soon as I have a picture I will email it. It's adorable and your instructions were great. Thank you!

Hi there
I found your pattern for the crocheted dog sweater (dogsweater.htm) and adapted it to fit my 2-month-old chihuahua. As you might guess, it's impossible to find commercially available coats for such a tiny animal so your website and pattern were an absolute godsend. The site seems to be gone today (tried to refer a friend to it) but I hope that's only temporary.
Here's a photo of Zoe wearing her size XXX-small version of your pattern.
Thank you so very much for posting the pattern and including such helpful directions on adapting it to fit other sizes of dogs.

Hi
This is a great site. I've crocheted for years but I didn't know how to follow a pattern. I've alwase made my own. I'm going to give one a try. You've made it easier to understand and the patterns don't seem as intimidating (hope spelling doesn't count) Thank you and God Bless

* My Pet Peeve:
By Cylinda Mathews
My personal pet peeve is to find an error at the very end of
a big pattern. About 6 years ago, I chose a lovely tablecloth
pattern from either a Magic or Decorative Crochet magazine
to make for my mom. On the last two rnds, after months of
working on this cloth, I found an error. Because these patterns
are in symbol crochet, and the edge of the cloth was hidden in
the picture, I had to design my own edging. My other pet peeve
is an error at the very beginning. If you can't figure it out, or
contact the designer, you can't even begin!

VIEWER JOKE
Submitted by Brooke Sizemore
A Kindergarten teacher talked to her children while they
drew. She would occasionally walk around to see
each child's work.
As she got to one little girl who was working
diligently, she asked what the drawing was? The girl
replied, "I'm drawing God."
The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows
what God looks like."
Without missing a beat, or looking up from her
drawing, the girl replied,
"They will in a minute."
VIEWER JOKE
Submitted by Brooke Sizemore
One day a little girl was sitting and watching
her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly
noticed that her mother has several strands of white hair
sticking out in contrast on her brunette head.
She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked,
"Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?" Her mother
replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong
and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.! "
The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then
said,
Momma, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?"
A man traveling down a country road was forced to stop before a giant puddle
covering the entire road. Looking to the side of the road, the man noticed
a farmer leaning on a fence. "Think it's safe to cross?" the man asked.
"I reckon so," replied the farmer. The car was immediately swallowed by the
puddle as the man drove in. In fact, it was so deep that he had to roll his
window down to swim out of his car back to the surface. As his head broke
the surface the man said to the farmer, "I thought you said I could safely
drive through this puddle!"
"Well, shoot!" said the farmer, scratching his head. "It only come up
chest-high on my ducks!"
When you are young, you want to be the master of your fate and the captain
of your soul.
When you are older, you will settle for being the master of your weight and
the captain of your bowling team.
A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was speeding
down Main Street.
"But, officer," the man began, "I can explain"...
"Just be quiet," snapped the officer. "I'm going to let you cool your heels
in jail until the chief gets back. So DON'T SAY ANOTHER WORD!"
"But, officer, I just wanted to say"...
"HEY - I said to keep quiet! You're going to jail!" A few hours later the officer looked in on
his prisoner and said, "Lucky for you that the chief's at his daughter's wedding.
He'll be in a good mood when he gets back."
"Don't count on it," answered the fellow in the cell. "I'm the groom!"
The devout cowboy lost his favorite Bible while he was mending fences out on
the range.
Three weeks later a cow walked up carrying the Bible in it's mouth.
The cowboy couldn't believe his eyes.
He took the book out of the cow's mouth, raised his eyes heavenward and
exclaimed, "It's a miracle!"
"Not really," said the cow.
"Your name was written inside the cover."
Early one morning, my husband, who works in a funeral home, woke me,
complaining of severe abdominal pains.
We rushed to the emergency room, where tests were performed to determine the
source of the pain.
My husband decided not to have me call in sick for him until we new what was
wrong.
When the results came back, the nurse informed us that, true to our
suspicions, he was suffering from a kidney stone.
I turned to my husband and asked, "Would you like me to call the funeral
home now?"
With a scornful look, the nurse turned to me and snapped, "Honey, he's not
that sick!"
