GENERAL NEWS

Dear Subscriber:

The kids are on vacation from school and most Churches are or will be having Vacation Bible School. Help your church by volunteering your time. Tim and I have been teaching VBS this week at our church. The theme is "Truth Trackers and the Secret of the Stone Tablets." The kids are having so much fun and the time flies by for them... and for the teachers. The teachers haven't been able to cover everything offered in our VBS resources as time doesn't permit it. But, the stories have been well remembered and that's what counts!

Help your Church this year and make a difference in the lives of children in your hometown.

p.s. Please visit our sponors. Thanks to them... we can offer you our newsletter for FREE.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

Hebrews 4:12-13

The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the Lord weighs the motives. Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Proverbs 16:1-3

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand int he path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.

Psalm 1:1-3

"THE BIBLE IS GOD'S ANSWER BOOK."

This quote is from Our Daily Bread - May, 2001 Issue.

"The smallest seed of faith is better than the largest fruit of happiness."
Henry David Thoreau

CROCHET STITCH, TECHNIQUE or TIP

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

If you know of any stitch I have omitted from our basics pages please drop me a line.

V-Stitch

The traditional V-Stitch is made as follows:
(Dc, ch 1, dc) in next st or ch sp.

If the afghan is a basic v-stitch afghan... once you have your base row you will work a v-stitch into the chain 1 space of each v-stitch on the previous row. To keep your edges even you have to make one double crochet on the end of each row and the chain 3 at the beginning of each row acts as a regular double crochet stitch also.

Here's a pattern that contains v-stitches and has photos:
http://crochet.about.com/hobbies/crochet/library/bl_doll_blanket.htm

ILLUSTRATED BASIC CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE BEGINNER:

HOW TO DO A STARTING CHAIN

SINGLE CROCHET (click here for instructions)

HALF DOUBLE CROCHET (click here for instructions)

DOUBLE CROCHET (click here for instructions)

TRIPLE CROCHET (click here for instructions)

CROCHET TIP:

If you have small children... purchase the little thread snips to use for cutting your yarn. You can buy snip scissors that look like a pen with a little clip. Clip them inside your shirt collar and you can work on your crochet project free from the worry of the kids making off with sharp scissors.

VIEWER TIP

Granny Squares....I have always found that to churn out Granny Squares in large numbers, it helps if you make a bunch of centers first; then add the second round to each, then the third round etc. etc. So when you reach the fifth and final round - you have a whole bunch of squares already done, fully complete. For some reason this seems to speed up the process over making each square one at a time from beginning to end. You don't have to do this with the full number of squares needed, but at least a dozen at a time is a good start - then you just start the process over again with another dozen. Happy Crocheting .... Nancy from New York

VIEWER TIP

Hi Lisa... the tip I found most useful, I found in your newsletter. It was to keep a package of babywipes next to your crochet spot. It never occurred to me just how much easier it is to protect your hard work from the oils and dirt on you hands. I guess I was just used to washing it afterward (which you do anyway, of course, but it is a lot easier when it is cleaner to begin with). I'm not sure when the last time was that you mentioned it in your newsletter, but I really loved that little piece of advice. I even keep a small travel pack in my crochet bag now, so I can keep my hands very clean, even when I crochet on-the-run. So thanks again for that tip (whoever sent it in). :)

WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF STITCHES TO FEATURE!
If you have a stitch or tip you'd like to see here

VIEWER FEEDBACK

NOTE: Any comments left on the CNM website or sent via email may be posted here.

What a wonderful page you have! I am a teacher of teenage boys in Tennessee--let me make sense of that--of incarcerated teenage boys. They crochet in an unbelievable quality, and at the afge of 48 after having worked for years to learn to crochet I have met the young man who was able to teach me! And your patterns and your page make it look so easy! Your page is wonderful--an obvious work by
a totally dedicated christian.
Thank you for the excellent
way you made the page and
for helping a very novitiated
crochet lover to find a pattern that made sense.
God Bless
Jane Tatum

Hi Lisa,
I am a fan of your website and also subscribe to the newsletter. Just have a question concerning the new message board. I have noticed the messages do not come up in any date order, like the old message board did. That had the newest message first, followed in descending order. It is hard to know if a new message is in now. Is there any reason that the dates aren't in order. It may be inconsequential but it was easier to follow.

Anyway, your website is great. I have found a lot of good patterns through your links as well as your patterns.

Take care,
Roseanna

<< reply >>

I have changed a setting for the board that will hopefully make it more like our old one. Each new 'original' message should appear at the top of the page. Replies posted should stay with the message replied to in the original space.

Lisa

"Hey you! Pull over!" shouted the traffic cop.

The lady complied, and the judge next day fined her twenty-five dollars.
She went home in great anxiety lest her husband, who always examined her
chequebook, should learn of the incident. Then inspiration struck and she
marked the check stub, "One pullover, $25."

A big-city lawyer was representing the railroad in a lawsuit filed by an old rancher. The rancher's prize bull was missing from the section through which the railroad passed. The rancher claimed that the bull must have been hit by the train, and wanted to be paid the fair value of the bull.

The case was scheduled to be tried before the justice of the peace in the back room of the general store.

As soon as the rancher showed up, the attorney for the railroad pulled him aside and tried to get him to settle out of court. The lawyer did his best selling job, and finally the rancher agreed to take half of what he was asking.

After the rancher had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn't resist gloating a little over his success, telling the rancher, "You know, I hate to tell you this, old man, but I put one over on you in there. I couldn't have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when
the train went through your ranch that morning. I didn't have one witness to put on the stand. I bluffed you!"

The old rancher replied, "Well, I'll tell you, young feller, I was a little worried about winning that case myself, because that darned bull came home this morning."

Queen Size?

A little boy went to the store with his grandmother and on the way home, he
was looking at the things she had purchased. He found a package of panty
hose and began to sound out the words "Queen Size". He then turned to his
grandmother and exclaimed, "Look Grandma, you wear the same size as our
bed!"

A young boy came to Sunday School late. His teacher knew that he was
usually very prompt and asked him if anything was wrong.

The boy replied no, that he was going fishing but his dad told him that he
needed to go to church.
The teacher was very impressed and asked the boy if his dad had explained to
him why it was more important to go to church than to go fishing, To which
the boy replied, yes he did, dad said he didn't have enough bait for both of
us.

Miss Jones had been giving her second-grade students a lesson on science.
She had explained about magnets and showed how they would pick up nails and
other bits of iron.

Now it was question time, and she asked, "My name begins with the letter 'M'
and I pick up things. What am I?"

A little boy on the front row proudly said, "You're a mother!"
