WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.

Isaiah 55:6

Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you.

Acts 8:22

Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and also do this or that." But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do, and does not do it, to him it is sin.

James 4: 14-17

"YOU CAN'T REPENT TOO SOON, FOR YOU DON'T KNOW HOW SOON IT MAY BE TOO LATE."

This quote is from Our Daily Bread - February, 2002 Issue.

American women have their own special eye for style and taste. They like apparel that has unique qualities and meets their needs for comfort and multi-purpose use. And we understand that. We also understand that value and customer service are important in the lifestyle of active, busy women who must often wear many hats. You want quick delivery . . . you like free shipping. And you don't have a great deal of time to be changing clothes several times in a day for multiple activities. You need versatile separates that travel well from work, to dinner with friends, to PTA meetings. And the good news is . . . we've got it all right here!

CROCHET STITCH, TECHNIQUE or TIP

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

If you know of any stitch I have omitted from our basics pages please drop me a line.

This crochet stitch courtesy of Phyllis Crihfield

LONG DOUBLE CROCHET
This stitch is actually a double crochet stitch worked in a different stitch:
Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch or space indicated, yarn over again and pull up a loop. (You should have three loops on your hook.) Yarn over again and draw through two of the loops on the hook. (You should have two loops on your hook.) Yarn over again and draw through the last two of the loops on the hook.

This stitch is used in the Navajo afghans. Instructions say to: work dc in front loop of sc 2 rows below. The main stitch of the pattern is single crochet working across the rows in the back loop of each single crochet st. Then when the pattern calls for it you make a long double crochet stitch and this stitch makes a raise stitch that stands out against the single sc stitches.
You can see the results of the stitch at: http://www.cgafghans.com/photos.html there are Navajo afghans at this site.

Long double crochet can be worked
1. "over" stitches to reach the row below
2. by skipping a stitch and working the long double into the skipped stitch on a row below
3. by working the rows in the back loops and then placing the long double in an unworked loop on the front side of a stitch on a prior row

CROCHET TIP:

To be sure you finish a motif afghan before your deadline make a motif and keep track of the time it takes. Now set aside the time needed each day to complete the motifs. Don't forget to allow extra time for joining them :o)

VIEWER TIP:

This is more of a money saving tip. I often make things in rounds and use stitch markers(the plastic clip that you buy to mark stitches) to remember where I started. Because they are pretty small, I often lose them. I one day could not find a stitch marker, so I used a plastic bread bag clip and cut it to size so that it would not fray the yarn. It worked very well.

Heart Bookmark

I just wanted to you to know that I love this pattern ! ! ! I made one to
give to my daughter for Valentine's Day. I had some left over red thread
from Christmas so I made the hearts red and the outside white (which looks
like lace). It turned out really cute.

I hadn't crocheted in awhile and couldn't find my books...for the life of me, I couldn't remember the difference between an HDC and a DC...your site saved me a trip to the store...thanks again.
God Bless.

Good Morning Lisa---
I wrote to you a few months ago about not being able to access your newsletter. I still could not access with the web address you gave me. After not being able to receive e-mails from a Canadian ISP--I had to establish an account at hotmail .com I then realized I could also use this address to get your newsletter so
I just signed up. I thought I would pass this information along in case there were others who had the same problem I had. I'm very happy that I now can read your newsletter. Have a great day--
Marie Coll

Hi Lisa,

Thank you for a great website. I have knitted and crocheted for many years
but lost most of my favourite patterns when we moved to the USA. Wonderful
to find someone prepared to take the time to help others find the perfect
pattern from home.

God bless
LordenHB

I just wanted to write you to say thank you. I have been crocheting for years but I could not read a pattern to save my sole. I found your site with your patterns and I am now making things I have always wanted to make. I still have alittle trouble reading a pattern but I do not let that stop me. Your patterns and simple and easy to understand instructions have helped me.

Thanks so Much
Marie Richards

I made the sweater for Pixie my minature dachshund. I made it a little bit to big but it still fits ok and it keeps her warm. I'm going to make her more and some for my friends and daughters' dog. Thank you so much for the pattern.

RE: Scarf/Afghan Pattern

Hi Lisa! Just wanted to let you know that your pattern worked out great and my afghan came out beautiful.
It was a total hit with my family! Thanks so much for your instructions, they were very clear and easy to follow.
Roberta

Hi!
I can't thank you enough! I learned how to crochet from my Granny (great
grandmother) when I was a child. Now, with a little guidance from my
Grandmother and your website, I am back on board. And - I couldn't be
enjoying it more. It is very kind of you to have gone to all of this
trouble.

This will probably sound stupid, but the biggest problem I've had so far
is figuring out which stitch is the last one on a row! Do you have a
page that addresses this?

Ah - I just found on crochet.com that part of my problem is knot knowing
when to count the turning chain as a stitch!

Thanks again,
Bekah Bickford
in Maine

p.s. Your patterns are my favorite! I just sent you page to my newly
online Grandmother!

Dear Bekah:

When working in single crochet stitches I chain 1 and turn... then work the first stitch in the same stitch as the beginning chain 1. When I work in taller stitches such as doubles I just make sure I have a stitch sitting on top of each stitch on the row. In the case of the double crochet stitches you chain 3 to turn and I count the chain 3 as the first stitch. I think it's easier if the designer says in the pattern where to place the stitch.

Why do men chase women they have no intention of marrying?
For the same reason dogs chase cars they have no intention of driving.

Where Storms Come From

A young Naval student was being put through the paces by an old
sea-captain.

"What would you do if a sudden storm sprang up on the starboard?"

"Throw out an anchor, sir."

"What would you do if another storm sprang up aft?"

"Throw out another anchor, sir."

"And if another terrific storm sprang up forward, what would you do?"

"Throw out another anchor."

"Hold on," said the Captain, "where are you getting all your anchors
from?"

"From the same place you're getting your storms, sir . . . ."

On the first day of Spring Training, a baseball scout brings a race horse
with him to add to the starting line-up. The coach asks, "What did you
bring that horse here for?"

The scout replies, "Wait until you see him bat."

All the players are laughing, until the horse comes to bat. At this point,
the horse grabs the bat, and everyone quiets down. They stare at the horse.

The pitcher, just shrugs his shoulders, and throws the ball toward home
plate, when astonishingly the horse hits the ball deep in the outfield.

The horse just stands there and does not move. The manager then yells at
the baseball scout to tell the horse to run to first base.

The scout looks back at the manager and yells back, "If he could run, he'd
be at Belmont!"

An elderly couple were driving across the country.
The woman was driving when she got pulled over by the highway patrol.
The officer said, "Ma'am did you know you were speeding?"

The woman, hard of hearing, turns to her husband and asks, "What did he say?"
The old man yells, "He says you were speeding!"

The patrolman says, "May I see your license?"
The woman turns to her husband and asks again, "What did he say?"
The old man yells, "He wants to see your license!"
The woman gave the officer her license.

The patrolman says, "I see you are from Arkansas. I spent some time there
once and went on a blind date with the ugliest woman I've ever seen."

The woman turned to her husband and asked, "What did he say?"

And the old man yells, "He said he knows you!"

"Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, nothing is medically wrong..."you're just lazy!"

"Okay," said the man.
