EXTENDED STITCHES AND LINKED STITCHES

QUESTION:
Hi-I've been on the crochetnmore site looking for a couple of stitches. I saw them in library books but didn't write them down because at the time they looked easy and I was going to use them right away. Right(LOL) ANYway-can you tell me how to do the EHDC (extended half double crochet) and I had a sample piece I did with the linked double crochet and lost it. It made a great coaster, but was rather thick for the washcloth. Thanks, Stephanie

ANSWER:
Pretty much, the only thing that makes the stitch "extended"
is the yarn over and draw through one loop at the beginning of the stitch.

Extended Single Crochet (ESC)
Insert hook in next ch yo, draw a loop through (2 loops on hook)
yo, draw through ONE loop on the hook (2 loops still on hook)
yo, draw through both loops on hook.

and an Extended Double Crochet (EDC)
yo, insert hook into stitch,
yo, pull through stitch (3 lps on hk),
yo, pull through 1 loop, (still have 3 lps on hk)
yo, pull through 2 lps, (2 lps on hk),
yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.

I hadn't seen this stitch used with a half double.. but it stands to reason that an Extended Half Double Crochet (EHDC) is:
Yo, insert hook into stitch,
yo, pull through stitch (3 lps on hk),
yo, pull through 1 loop, (still have 3 lps on hk)
yo, pull through remaining 3 loops.

Now for the linked stitches.
This page explains a linked treble:
http://www.geocities.com/pmshc/Stitchguide.html
as...
Linked-treble--l-tr:
insert hook in upper horizontal lp of last st made (see step #1 above),
yo, draw lp through,
insert hook in lower horizontal lp on same st (see step #2),
yo, draw lp through, insert hook in next st on row you are working (see step #3),
yo, draw lp through, (yo, draw lp through 2 loops on hook) 3 times.

All you need to do is make sure you join at each step for the particular stitch you are doing.
So, for a Linked Double Crochet one of the steps would be omitted.

BLANKET STITCH

QUESTION:
Hi Lisa, I found this really cool pattern for a football shaped coaster, I crocheted the coaster part with no problem. The pattern then stated to do a blanket stitch around the edge of the football. I did a google search and found instructions for the blanket stitch, but I don't think they are explained very well, its just not making any sense to me. Do you think you could help? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Peggy

ANSWER:
Hi Peggy: You can find a very simple illustration at Annie's Attic that explains the Blanket Stitch pretty well (and there's also a video link):
http://www.anniesattic.com/cross-stitch/content.html?content_id=46

There's a very good photo illustrated set of instructions at About.com: http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa120702.htm

As you can see... the blanket stitch can be used in the center of a fabric or along the edges.
Hope this helps.

CROCHET TIP

Crochet projects don't have to be strictly yarn or thread.
Projects can be made by using a variety of different types of materials:
    Material
    Wire
    Plastic Bag Strips
    Beads
    Etc.
I made a purse once using the cut off portion of the leg from an old pair of blue jeans.
I sewed the bottom of the leg closed, then attached a crocheted flap to the top and added
a crocheted handle.

Scrap Yarn Ideas

17. How about a tube afghan. You make a chain a little more than twice the width that you would like your afghan to be. Carefully join the chain, then just crochet in your favorite stitch in rounds. You can plan your colors if you have lots of scraps or just add colors as you finish projects. You can also use less chains and make pet mats for the shelter. The joy of this project is that if you use knots, all the knots are inside. Yahoo

18. Another scrap idea is to get or make a spool knitter for the kids or yourself, to do some spool knitting. Jeanne Whipple

RE: Connecting Granny Squares

Hi, I am slowly but surely learning how to crochet. A lady at worker got me started, and I have done 15 aphagans so far, and started on granny squares with leftovers, and successfully learned how to do them with your pattern. Now, I need to connect them - do you have any pattern suggestions?

Thanks so much!! :

RE: ReadAPattern

Crochet and More: I have only been crocheting for 2 days - had a 2 hour class but learned more on my own by reading books and articles. Well, the instructions left me perplexed and confused. Then, I found your site and I just wanted to touch base with you and say Thank you for the "Plain English" instructions for crochet. It's hard to know what is meant and I appreciate the deciphering. Now, if I can just make something !!! I will let you know how my project (a little hat) turns out with your help in deciphering the instructions. I plan to visit your site when I can. Sincerely, Betty Fitch

Re: crochet question

Could you tell me when a pattern says to use a double strand of "color A" and chain 2. Do they mean to actually use 2 balls of yarn; 2 strands side by side? I have crocheted a little bit in the past and have decided to go back to it again. This is the first instruction on the pattern for a throw I am making and I am not familiar with this. Thank you for any help you can offer. Chris

<< reply >>

YES... just hold two strands of color A and work as you normally would with one strand. You can work from two separate skeins of yarn or use both ends of one skein.

RE: Cross Stitch Towel Topper

Greetings, I always have a problem getting exactly 57 stitches on the first row of the cross stitch towel topper. I either wind up with 57 stitches BEFORE I come to the end of the row, or else less than 57 stitches when I get to the end of the row. Do you have a suggestion on how I can get the right amount of stitches without having to start over? Thanks, Kathy

<< reply >>

Hi Kathy:

The trick to this is... divide the towel.
If you fold the towel in half... one stitch goes on the fold.
Then 28 stitches on each side of the fold.
Try folding each half to divide it even more... you can use pins or even a
disappearing marker to make dots to help you place the stitches. Hope this helps.

<< Kathy's reply >>

Thanks, I have come up with my own solution. I crochet a chain of 57 stitches, then I take the chained piece and hold it in place behind the towel, match-up the stitches where they would be on the towel while I use the smaller hook to crochet through the towel! I still have some kinks to work out. Your method sounds easy too. Kathy

<< Lisa's reply >>

You're welcome Kathy. That's a great idea also! Have you tried the no sew towel topper pattern? http://crochetnmore.com/nosewtoweltopper.htm
Totally eliminates that pesky "first row" :o)

Lisa, I just thought I'd share an idea that I had with you. I am crocheting some baby sweaters, blankets, hats and booties and then I will donate them to a pregnancy crisis center. I had this idea last week. I will fill a box of stuff but I'll also buy onesies, bottles and other stuff to put in the box. I just thought you'd like to know about this idea. If your interested in doing something similar, you can go to www.yellowbook.com and type in "abortion alternatives" and do a search in your area. Let me know what you think. :) God bless! Love, Karen www.joypals.com

<< reply >>

That's a great idea. Donations to food pantries in your area are also a great way to help others.
Merry Christmas!

I have to tell you about this new book.
SweaterBabe.com's Fabulous & Flirty Crochet
I'm so happy to have it in my crochet library.

Katherine Lee has an eye for style and a definite knack for creating beautiful crochet patterns.
I was really happy with the large colorful project photos.
There's something for everyone!
The aspect of Fabulous and Flirty Crochet that stood out to me was the section on the yarns used in the patterns.
One page shows "actual size" photos of the yarns which makes it super easy to substitute other yarns if you want to.
For those who stay strictly to the recommended yarn in a pattern Katherine has included a yarn resource list.
The projects are very fashionable and perfect for gift giving... though I'm sure you'll have to make something for yourself :o)

HUMOR

I called to make airline reservations and was put on hold.
After several minutes of taped music, a recorded voice came on:
"If you have been waiting longer than ten minutes, you may press eight.
This will not speed up your call, but it will give you something to do while you wait."

I ran short of money while visiting my brother, and borrowed $50 from him. After my return home, I wrote him a short letter every few weeks, enclosing a $5 check in each one. He called me up and told me how much he enjoyed the letters, regardless of the money; I had never written regularly before. Eventually I sent off a letter and the last five-dollar check.

In my mail box the next week I found an envelope from my brother.
Inside was another $50.

An applicant was filling out a job application. When he came to the question, "Have you ever been arrested?" he wrote, "No."

The next question, intended for people who had answered in the affirmative to the previous question, was "Why?" The applicant answered it anyway: "Never got caught."

A professor was giving a lecture on company slogans in a college advertising and marketing class.

"Joe," he asked, "which company has the slogan, 'Come fly the friendly skies'?"
"United." Joe answered.

"Brenda, can you tell me which company has the slogan, "Don't leave home without it?"
Brenda answered the correct credit card company with no difficulty.

"Now John, Tell me which company uses the slogan, 'Just do it'?"
And John answered, "Mom."

Esther Cohen had three very active boys. One summer evening she was playing cops and robbers in the back yard after dinner. One of the boys "shot" his mother and yelled, "Bang! You're dead."She slumped to the ground and when she didn't get up right away, a neighbor ran over to see if she had been hurt in the fall.

When the neighbor bent over, the overworked mother opened one eye and said, "Shhh. Don't give me away. It's the only chance I've had to rest all day."

In a software design meeting, we were using typical technical jargon to discuss a data exchange interface with a vendor. One co-worker said the programming we had ordered was delayed because the vendor was suffering from a "severe nonlinear waterfowl issue."

Curious, the team leader raised his eyebrows and asked, "What exactly is that?"

The programmer replied, "They don't have all their ducks in a row."

To help a friend lose weight, I told her that she should switch to lower-fat foods, including skim milk. When she said her family would drink only whole milk, I suggested that she keep their regular container and refill it with skim milk. This worked for quite a while, until her daughter asked one morning whether the milk was okay.

"Sure, it's fine," my friend answered, fearing she had been found out. "Why do you ask?"

The daughter explained, "Well, according to the expiration date, this milk expired two years ago!"

During a sermon one Sunday, the pastor heard two teenage girls in the back giggling and disturbing people. He interrupted his sermon and announced sternly,
"There are two of you here who have not heard a word I've said."
That quieted them down.

When the service was over, he went to greet people at the front door.
Three different adults apologized for going to sleep in church, promising it would never happen again.

A woman went to traffic violation court for speeding, lost the argument as it always happens, and paid the fine. So the police clerk issued her a receipt for her payment of fine. The lady annoyed at her defeat in the court asked him curtly,
"What am I supposed to do with this?"

"Keep it," the clerk advised politely.
