WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

"The devil loves it when we skip church on rainy Sundays...
'Cause he knows that dry people burn faster."
(Quote sent in by
Kathy Jeske)

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." In the same way He took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.

1 Timothy 2:8

...pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18

Pray, then, in this way; 'Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed by Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.' For if you forgive men for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Matthew 6: 9-15

"WHEN IT'S TIME TO BREATHE A PRAYER OF THANKS,
DON'T HOLD Y OUR BREATH."

This quote is from Our Daily Bread - October, 2005 Issue.

"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst." Matthew 18:20

CROCHET STITCH or TECHNIQUE

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

KNURL STITCH
Stitch idea submitted by Barb Grofe

I need to know how to do the knurl stitch for a crocheted fisherman pattern. If you or anyone you know can give me instructions on how to do it I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you. Barb Grofe

ANSWER

The Knurl Stitch has many other names.
"reverse single crochet"
"crab stitch"
"shrimp stitch"
"pie crust stitch"
"Italian edge"

You work the first reverse single into the same stitch as you just finished... then you continue going in the opposite direction on your work. Take a look at these sites for helpful illustrations:

http://www.crochetcabana.com/stitches/ltc-stitches-reverse_sc.htm

http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa112997.htm

You are really working the regular single crochet stitch but you
work from left to right instead of right to left on the row.

Re: web site

Hi, I just "accidentally" upon your web-site (We know how that accident happened!) It is absolutely wonderful , not just all the great crochet tips but your testimony. It is so refreshing to see someone who is not afraid to share Jesus and who shares her web page with HIM. I hoped you have lots of links to bring others here. I am trying to pick up my crocheting distowels for gifts again and had lost my pattern. So now I will get started again. I will pray that many others are "accidentally" led to your web-site! Re: dolphin squares

I just finished making my daughter a small pillow using the dolphin square pattern from you. It was so simple! Thank you for the pattern. Turned out beautiful. Can't wait to get started on the matching afgan for her bed. She loves dolphins and is slowly turning her bedroom into a "dolphin tank" LOL. This is the day the Lord has made. Sharon

...s!mply FABulous, Lisa, the crochetnmore s!te!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MANY silent echoes of "thanks!" for ALL the shared crocheting language found!!!

again, much much appreciation, Lisa dear, for keeping the art of crochet from becoming lost.

Mae

Greetings Lisa, Ever wonder how to recycle those old cassettes ? It's a bit difficult, Lisa, as the cassette tape seems to sort of sticks or drags a bit on the crochet needle, but the effects of crocheting with the cassette tape is quite different. It's marvelous for small handbags and cell phone bags. For a stiffer effect, double up the cassette tape. When the cassette tape is added to various other yarns it adds a bit of a glimmer, a bit like marquisette. Just an idea, Lisa. The "crochetnmore" site is a wonderful source of knowledge and ideas. Keep up the good work!

<< reply >>

Great idea! I've been experimenting with patterns using recycled materials myself. Thanks for such a nice compliment!

Re: ripple

Dear Lisa,

I am so glad I googled today and located this site. I am a Christian, a pastors wife who has been looking for a easy no-brainer ripple afghan or something like that. I sit through lots of meetings and seminars and want to have a pattern that I don’t have to count or concentrate on and still be doing something with my hands. Anyways, I thought if I could find a easy pattern I could use up some of my yarn and make afghans for the folks in our local nursing home or for the ped. ward in the hospital. If you can refer me to the resource to get such a pattern I would greatly appreciate it. May God's grace and peace be multiplied unto you.
In Christ
Cindy

Hi Cindy:
Great to talk to you! I used this pattern when I was on jury duty:

it's easy.

HUMOR

After being laid off from five different jobs in four months, my Uncle Joe was hired by a warehouse. One day he lost control of a forklift and drove it off the loading dock. Surveying the damage, the owner shook his head and said he'd have to withhold 10 percent of Uncle Joe's wages to pay for the repairs.

"How much will it cost?" asked my uncle.

"About $4,500," said the owner.

"What a relief!" exclaimed Uncle Joe. "I've finally got job security!"

A young man called his mother and announced excitedly that he had just met the woman of his dreams. Now what should he do?

His mother had an idea:
"Why don't you send her flowers, and on the card invite her to your apartment for a home-cooked meal?"

He thought this was a great strategy, and a week later, the woman came to dinner.
His mother called the next day to see how things had gone.

"I was totally humiliated," he moaned.
"She insisted on washing the dishes."

"What's wrong with that?" asked his mother.

"We hadn't started eating yet."

Toward the end of our senior year in high school, we were required to take a CPR course. The classes used the well known mannequin victim, Resusci-Annie, to practice. Typical of most models, this Resusci-Annie was only a torso, to allow for storage in a carrying case. The class went off in groups to practice. As instructed, one of my classmates gently shook the doll and asked "Are you all right?"

He then put his ear over the mannequin's mouth to listen for breathing.
Suddenly he turned to the instructor and exclaimed, "She said she can't feel her legs!"

I have my own system for labeling homemade freezer meals.
Forget calling them "Veal Parmigiana" or "Turkey Loaf" or "Beef Pot Pie."

If you look in my freezer you'll see
"Whatever," "Anything," "I Don't Know," and, my favorite, "Food."

That way when I ask my husband what he wants for dinner, I'm certain to have what he wants."

A trio of old veterans were bragging about the heroic exploits of their ancestors one afternoon down at the VFW hall.

"My great grandfather, at age 13," one declared proudly, "was a drummer boy at Shiloh."

"Mine," boasts another, "went down with Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn."

"I'm the only soldier in my family," confessed vet number three, "but if my great grandfather was living today he'd be the most famous man in the world."

"Really? What'd he do?" his friends wanted to know.

"Nothing much. But he would be 165 years old."

One morning a local highway department crew reaches their job-site and realizes they have forgotten all their shovels. The crew's foreman radios the office and tells his supervisor the situation. The supervisor radios back and says, "Don't worry, we'll send some shovels... just lean on each other until they arrive."

Jimmy was at his first day of school. The teacher advised the class to start the day with the Pledge of Allegiance, and instructed them to put their right hands over their hearts and repeat after him. He looked around the room as he started the recitation, "I pledge allegiance to the flag..."

When the teacher's eyes fell on Jimmy, he noticed his hand over the right cheek of his behind.
"James, I will not continue till you put your hand over your heart."

Jimmy replied, "It is over my heart."

After several attempts to get Jimmy to put his hand over his heart, the teacher asked,
"Why do you think that is your heart?"

"Because, every time my Grandma comes to visit, she picks me up, pats me here, and says, 'Bless your little heart,' and my Grandma wouldn't lie."

A company offered tours through the historic district, led by guides dressed in Colonial clothing. While leading a group, one of the guides, tripped and fell, breaking his wrist. He went to the hospital, and as he sat waiting in the emergency room, a policeman walked by. Doing a double take at him in his 18th-century garb he asked, "Just how long have you been waiting?"
