GENERAL NEWS

Dear Subscriber:

Tim and I just finished a week of Vacation Bible School at the Airport Gardens Baptist Church. The Lord blessed us with a huge class compared with previous years. We had 24 children enrolled in our class and when we gave out their certificates we had them sing for the congregation. Everyone loved it and the kids had a wonderful time.

For those of you who have signed up for our Pen Pal List and haven't received a reply, please hang in there. I will be updating the Pen Pal List with new participants hopefully this week.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Why do you boast in evil. O mighty man? The lovingkindness of God endures all day long. Your tongue devises destruction, like a sharp razor, O worker of deceit. You love evil more than good, falsehood more than speaking what is right. You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue. But God will break you down forever; He will snatch you up, and tear you away from your tent, and uproot you from the land of the living. And the righteous will see and fear, and will laugh at him, saying, behold, the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and was strong in his evil desire.

Psalm 52: 1-7

For riches are not forever, nor does a crown endure to all generations.

Proverbs 27:24

But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang.

1 Timothy 6:9-10

Because you say "I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and you do
not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.

Revelation 3:17

"THE RICHEST PEOPLE ON EARTH ARE THOSE WHO INVEST THEIR LIVES IN HEAVEN.."

This quote is from Our Daily Bread - July, 2002 Issue.

Introducing the MA's Craft Caddy

A sturdy good looking work-storage station for your crocheting and other needle working needs as well as other hobbies and crafts... all the way to a fly tying station.
Check us out at slevinenterprises.com
The answer to your organizing and work place needs.

TESTIMONIAL:
I've used Ma's Craft Caddy for about 2 months now. I organized
my crochet supplies for a while but found the caddy to be too heavy for me to
move around very much but as a stationary work center it's great!
So I decided to use Ma's Craft Caddy to organize
my daughter's ever growing collection of craft supplies.
She has one of the old fashion school desks sitting beside the craft caddy
which allows her easy access to anything she needs for her current
craft project. We used the rod to hang her tape and she loves it!
Before Ma's Craft Caddy she had all of her craft supplies in a
plastic tote and couldn't ever find what she needed without pouring
everything out. Now she can access her tape, paper or glue at in no time
and she loves it! ..............Lisa Hamblin

CROCHET STITCH, TECHNIQUE or TIP

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

If you know of any stitch I have omitted from our basics pages please drop me a line.

Crocheting around an object or in the ends of rows.

This technique courtesy of Jolene Larson

"Here is something I'd like to see discussed. (Forgive me if you have covered
this topic before, as I just subscribed) I am new to crochet and find it
hard to sc when it says to go around an object, whether it be an afghan or a
dishcloth, and sc down the sides of the object. It's easy to do it on the
top and bottoms, where you've single or double crocheted or whatever, but
hard to do it on the sides. It's hard to know exactly where to sc. ?? Jolene"

SINGLE CROCHET OVER RING

Working over ring, holding yarn in left hand behind ring, insert hook
under/inside ring, yo, draw up a lp to the top of the ring, yo, draw through both lps on hk.
NOTE: This stitch is used in projects that require plastic or metal rings.
You can also crochet over a ring made from chains. Just chain as many as you'd like to use,
join with a sl st to form the ring and begin doing the Sc over ring stitch.

WORKING IN ROW ENDS

Sometimes a pattern has you work rows of stitches and then to form a border or edging
you are instructed to "work in the row ends". The row ends are the first & last stitches you did on each row. If the rows are single crochet stitches then the "end of the row" refers to
making the required stitches around the first & last single crochet stitches on each row.
If the first & last stitches on the row are double crochet stitches you work around the post of the double crochet stitches. No matter what kind of stitch you are using you work around the actual stitch on the end of the row... not into the top of it.

The first photo in the following picture shows a swatch turned on its side
with the ends of the rows on the top. I used a white cotton thread to work into the
row ends so you could see where the stitches go. The second photo shows the entire
piece with a border added. I worked one single crochet into each row end, one single
into each unworked loop of the foundation chain, one single in each row end up the opposite
side, and one single in each stitch on the last row I had made. For each corner I worked
3 singles so the motif wouldn't curl up.

CROCHET TIP:

VIEWER TIP:
Dear Crochet Friends,

I have crocheted for years and very often carry my hooks in my pocket. Not a good idea if the tips aren't protected. They go right through the fabric of my dress. I discovered that if I cut oxygen tubing into 1 1/2 - 2" lengths and slip them over the hook I don't have any more problems. Had a friend who was on oxygen; and when the tubing was changed, she gave me the old one. There was so much that I was able to cut "protectors" for every hook I have.
Happy crocheting.
Rose Marie Gersema, Shell Rock, Iowa

VIEWER TIP:

Howdy,
When I am crocheting I put a large safety pin in the first and one in the last stitch of row 10. Then when I do 10 more rows, I move the pins up to that row (eg: row 20, move to row 30, more to row 40, etc.). This way I know which are even and which are odd rows. It also lets me know, immediately, what row I am on and is easier to tell where I stopped. When I get to row 50 (and 100, and then 150,etc.) I leave the safety pins in the first and last stitches of these rows alone, then starting with the next 10th row, I put in 2 more pins.
Cindi

VIEWER TIP:
Hi Lisa!
I use graphs quite a bit & found that if I start from one side of the graph I'll "write out" just what to do. Example...Crochet two white stitches, four blue , three white, etc. It makes it easier than trying to follow the graph "box for box". I hope I made myself clear on this. Do the same for the next row & so on. If I can help in any way, let me know. Please feel free to contact me ... Happy crocheting! Millie

WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF STITCHES TO FEATURE!

RE: The Dog House

Hello cozy pet owner with a flare for crochet! I was so excited to find your doggy sweater pattern the dogs look so cute in the pictures and comfy too. I live in northern British Columbia Canada and we do have around 6-7 months of cold weather. I have a little Yorky-poo named Diva and she appsolutly loves her sweater. I'm a knitter as well but I love the ease at which your sweater crocheted up... in fact I had knit my dog a dinosaure sweater and my cousins loved the sweater so much they each wanted one for their dogs. My cousins also live in BC but in the warmer part so I made their sweaters out of dishcloth weight cotton.I made the body a dino green and the spots and spikes a variegated cotton aswell. I enjoyed the pattern so much I whipped up a few of them for christmas presents. Thankyou so much and I'd love to hear back from you. Happy Happy Crocheting!!!!!!

Hi there!
Just wanted to say that you have an excellent homepage-- found it tonight-- I am already crocheting items for Christmas! Thank you!

Lisa :)

Lisa,
I just want to say Thank you for this website. It is the greatest! It is so informative! And I absolutely love it. I find more stuff to do and learn about! So THANK YOU!

Hi my name is Thea and i have just picked up my crochet hook after learning at my mothers knee 40 years ago, and i just can't put it down, i am loving it. I have searched the internet and found some wonderful free patterns and that is how i came across you, i wanted to say thank you this site has given me immense pleasure.

RE: Thank You

I would like to thank you for your wonderful site. I've always wanted to
learn how to crochet, tried it a couple of times but never really got
the hang of it until recently. I found your web site in error, but it
turn out to be the best error I had made while surfing the net. I
basically read your Crochet Basics page and immediately started
practicing with some of the more simple stitches like the SC, HDC, DC,
and after a few runs I tried the hanging dish towel pattern on your site
and did pretty good for being a first timer. Your instructions are easy
to read and follow, I hope that eventually I can crochet something
bigger, like a baby blanket.
Again thank you very much for such a helpful site.

Thanks,
Sandy Rodriguez

RE: For Andrew

Thank you for the crochet patterns you have available on your web site. My sister had a baby 14 days ago, she was 6-1/2 weeks premature. She's so tiny we are having a hard time finding things to fit her. Your hat and bootie patterns are perfect thank you

Can't You...

There were two fitness experts, Elmer and Larry, out hunting in the
woods who got lost. Elmer was panicky, so Larry said to him, 'Don't
worry, all we have to do is shoot three times into the air and
someone will come to rescue us.'
Which they did. But nobody came. Finally, Larry said, 'Elmer, I'm
getting kind of worried. We're down to our last three arrows!'

Uncle Leroy got a job down at the Broom Factory.

On his first day the straw boss (Floor supervisor)calls ol' Leroy into his
little office and says,

"You the new man huh? What is yer name?"

Leroy replied "Leroy"

The straw boss says "I don't call anyone by first names. It breeds
familiarity and that leads to breakdown in my Authority. I refer to all
employees by last names; Now what is Your Last Name!"

Leroy sort of smiles and says "Its "Darling" Leroy Darling!

The Straw Boss said "Now Leroy the next thing........"

The interviewer examined the job application then turned to the prospective
employee.

"I see you have put ASAP down for the date you are available to start,
meaning as soon as possible, of course. However, I see you've put AMAP down
for required salary. I don't believe I've ever seen that before, what does
it mean?"

The applicant replied, "As Much as Possible!"

The Value Of Exercise

1. It is well-documented that for every mile that you jog, you add one
minute to your life. This enables you, at age 85, to spend an additional
five months in a nursing home at $5,000 per month.
2. My grandmother started walking 5 miles a day when she was 60.
She is now 97 and we have no idea where she is.
3. I have to exercise early in the morning, before my brain figures
out what I am doing.
4. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who
annoy me.
5. The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.

The Light Was On but Nobody Was Home

A guy walked into a little corner store with a shotgun and demanded all
the cash from the cash drawer. After the cashier put the cash in a bag,
the robber saw a bottle of scotch that he wanted on the shelf behind the
counter.

He told the cashier to put it in the bag as well, but he refused, saying,
"I don't believe you are over 21."

The robber said he was, but the clerk still refused to give it to him
because he didn't believe him.

At this point the robber took his drivers license out of his wallet and
gave it to the clerk.

The clerk looked it over, and agreed that the man was in fact over 21 and
he put the scotch in the bag.

The robber then ran from the store with his loot.

The cashier promptly called the police and gave them the name and address
that he got off the license. They arrested the robber an hour later.

Just The Facts
"I want to know what good is a web search engine that
returns 324,909,188 'matches' to my key word. That's like
saying, "Good news, we've located the product you're looking
for. It's on Earth." -Bruce Cameron

The world's first fully computerized airliner was ready for its maiden
flight without pilots or crew.

The plane taxied to the loading area automatically, its doors opened
automatically, the steps came out automatically.

The passengers boarded the plane and took their seats.

The steps retreated automatically, the doors closed, and the airplane taxied
toward the runway.

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen," a voice intoned.

"Welcome to the debut of the world's first fully computerized airliner.
Everything on this aircraft is run electronically. Just sit back and relax.
Nothing can go wrong ... Nothing can go wrong...nothing can go wrong...."

A man drives up and parks his car near the Capitol building.
Immediately, a security guard rushes out and yells,
"Sir! Sir! You can't park your car there, Congress is in session!"
The man replies calmly, "Oh don't worry, I use The Club when I
park in a high crime neighborhood."
