WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Truthful lips will be established forever, but a lying tongue is only for a moment. Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but counselors of peace have joy. No harm befalls the righteous, but the wicked are filled with trouble. Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal faithfully are His delight.

Proverbs 12:18-22

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, but the mouth of fools spouts folly. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the evil and the good. A soothing tongue is a tree of life, but perversion in it crushes the spirit.

Proverbs 15:1-4

You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.

Leviticus 19:18

You have heard that it was said, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR, and hate your enemy." But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Matthew 5:43-45

"IF YOU KEEP IN TUNE WITH CHRIST,
YOU CAN SING EVEN WHEN ALL IS DARK."

This quote is from Our Daily Bread - March, 2002 Issue.

THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER
(send in by Lois Karklus)
A mother of a 9 year old boy, Mark, received a phone call in the middle
of the afternoon. It was the teacher from her son's school.
"Mrs. Smith, something unusual happened today in your son's third grade
class. Your son did something that surprised me so much that I thought
you should know about it immediately."
Mother seldom want to hear from their child's teacher in the middle of
the day. The mother was uneasy and nervous by such a beginning to a
phone call. "What now?" the mother wondered.
The teacher continued, "I have been teaching for many years and nothing
like this has happened until now. This morning I was teaching a lesson
on creative writing. And as I always do, I tell the story of the ant and
the grasshopper. The ant works hard all summer and stores up plenty of
food. But the grasshopper plays all summer and does no work.
Then winter comes. The grasshopper begins to starve because he has no
food. So he hops to the ants house and begins to beg. 'Please Mr. Ant,
you have much food please let me eat, too.' Now boys and girls your job
is to write the ending to the story.
Your son, Mark, raised his hand. "Teacher, may I draw a picture?"
"Well, yes, Mark, if you like, you may draw a picture. But first you
must write the ending to the story."
The papers came in. As in all the years past, most of the students said
that the ant shared his food through the winter and both the ant and the grasshopper lived.
As always, a few children said, 'The ant said, "No, Mr. Grasshopper. You
should have worked in the summer and not played. Now, I have just enough
food for myself." So the ant lived and the grasshopper died.
But your son ended the story in a way different from any other child,
ever. He wrote, "So the ant gave all of his food to the grasshopper; the
grasshopper lived through the winter. But the ant died."
And the picture?
At the bottom of the page, Mark had drawn three crosses. "He gave
everything to us so that we might live; but Jesus died."

Crocheting using a Chart or Graph

Using a chart (or graph) to crochet by can be a bit confusing. With the
first chart I used I think I ripped out about 4-5 rows because I wasn't
comfortable with following a graph or chart instead of a regular pattern
and I kept missing stitches. (the first chart I used was the Baby's ABC's Afghan".

The biggest thing to remember is to pay close attention to which way you are
going on the chart. You can do this by marking your rows as you go.

Placing arrows or symbols beside each row also helps.

For example (in the case of a right handed crocheter) ... place an "R"
beside all rows that are the right side of the project and an "W" beside all
wrong side rows. This will help you remember which direction you are going.
When reading the chart you would read all right side rows (marked with "R")
right to left and read all of the wrong side rows (marked with "L") from
left to right.

Other than this, check off the rows as you go just as in a regular pattern.

When you encounter a color change you might want to refer to the page that
follows. It discusses how to change colors and has tips on how to carry old
colors through as you add new colors:
http://crochet.about.com/hobbies/crochet/library/weekly/aa072697.htm

If you use your graph for strictly single crochet stitches this page may
prove helpful:
Tapestry Crochet in Rounds for Right-Handed Crocheters
Just work a single crochet stitch for each block of the graph.

CROCHET TIP:

Some people like to wind their yarn into a ball before use. You may want to unravel a project that wasn't going as planned and reuse that yarn. Be careful not to stretch the yarn too tightly when you wind it into the ball. Stretching the yarn tends to make it thinner which will cause a future project made with the yarn to have thinner stitches.

In response to your question on your homepage, yes I do know Jesus Christ as my personal Savior..... since 1946. What a joy to find a site with "good things". I've thought more than once about discontinuing my internet service because of all the "garbage" e-mails that try to sneak through. Finding a site such as yours is a blessing. Thankyou. Rebecca Newland

Hi!
If no one has taken the time lately to tell you how much they appreciate your site and how wonderful it is-I am now.
Thanks so much for all the hard work you do for us, it is really appreciated more than you know.

"how to read a pattern" was a very big help to me can you tell me how to do the ripple afghan i tiried so many time i still get confused.

Cecilia

<reply>

Hi Cecilia:

I'm glad my "how to read a pattern" section is helpful to you.
The best tip I can give you for this type of pattern is for you to count the
number of stitches at both ends of each row as you go.

As an example... each ripple pattern consists of "mountains" and "valleys".
When working each row there are a certain number of stitches between the
mountains and the valleys and there should be an increase at the "mountain
peak" and a decrease at the "valley bottom". Does that make sense? Anyway,
not counting the increases and decreases you should have the same number of
stitches on each side of the mountain. If this number is 12 (for example)
then you should have 12 stitches at the both ends of each row. If you keep
this consistent the edges should be even.

Try these two patterns:
http://www.thefamily.com/countrycottage/crochet/cp2.html
http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/cts-ripl.asp

I hope this helps.

Hi,

Today was my first time at your website. I think it is GREAT!!!. I also
love the Lord and I think it is awesome that you are giving people the
gospel on your website.

Just thought you'd like to know.

RE: Scarf (or afghan) pattern

Lisa,

I have made a few lapghans using this pattern and think it's great (I chain
102 and work the pattern vertically until I get the width I want). I am
starting a group of ladies in our parish who will be crocheting lapghans for
the members of our church who are shut-ins. I was wondering if I could
pass on your pattern (either by link or print out for those without internet
access) to those who are new to crocheting since this is so easy and looks
so nice when finished.

I know you won't have objections to passing on the link but didn't know if
giving a printed copy to someone without internet access would be a problem.
The pattern will not be sold but passed on to a newbie once they learn the
basic stitches.

If passing on printed copies would be a problem, please let me know. I see
on your website where you have been ill and my prayers are for a quick
recovery.

Thanks so much for the website and all it contains!!

Lisa Foster

<reply>

Hi Lisa:

I'm glad you enjoy the pattern... feel free to print copies for anyone you
know who doesn't have the internet to get their own. I know I print
patterns for a couple of my friends from time to time....

Lisa

I just wanted to tell you something special. I looked on the
search engine for crotchet patterns. Yours was the first one
up. I usually look further, but I was drawn to yours. When it came up I felt such an anointing I could hardly believe it. God really comes forth from the very first page.
I haven't looked at the patterns yet because I just had to tell
you. I know you must pray over your business and it shows! I have really been blessed already. THANKS!
Your Sister in Christ,
Joyce E. Haun

I suggest you find a way to let EVERYBODY know what great intructions you have. When I first learned to crochet many years ago, the biggest struggle was trying to figure out what the pattern directions meant. It took some time, but now, thanks to you, my granddaughters won't have the same problem. I sure would be nice to find the same kind of wondeerful directions for knitting for them. Thank you very much.
Norma

There's a little old Christian lady living next door to an atheist. Every morning the lady comes out onto her front porch and shouts "Praise the Lord!".

The atheist yells back, "There is no God". She does this every morning with the same result.

As time goes on the lady runs into financial difficulties and has
trouble buying food. She goes out onto the porch and asks God for help with groceries, then says "Praise the Lord". The next morning she goes out onto the porch and there's the groceries she's asked for, of course she says "Praise the Lord".

The atheist jumps out from behind a bush and says, "Ha, I bought those groceries - there is no God".

The lady looks at him and smiles, she shouts "Praise the Lord, not only did you provide for me Lord, you made Satan pay for the groceries!!"

An atheist complained to a friend, "Christians have their special holidays, such as Christmas and Easter; and Jewish folks celebrate their holidays, such as Passover and Yom Kippur. EVERY religion has its holidays. But we atheists," he said, "have no recognized national holidays. It's unfair discrimination."

His friend replied, "Well...Why don't you celebrate April first!

A woman was driving her old beat up car on the Highway with her 7 yr. old
son, Little Johnny.

She tried to keep up with traffic but they were flying by her. After
getting caught in a large group of car's flying down the road she looked at
her speedometer to see she was doing 15 miles over the speed limit.

Slowing down, she moved over to the side and got out of the clump that soon
left her behind. She looked up and saw the flashing lights of a police car.
Pulling over she waited for the officer to come up to her car.

As he did he said, "Ma'am do you know why I pulled you over?"

Little Johnny piped up from the back seat,

"I do! Because you couldn't catch the other cars!"

A young couple lived in a town filled with crime.

After three neighbors had been robbed, the couple decided to get a guard
dog.

Visiting the pet store, the young wife asked for a good guard dog.

"Sorry, we're all sold out," the clerk replied. "All we have left is this
little Scottie dog. But he does know karate!"

The woman didn't believe the clerk, so he told the dog to karate a chair.
The dog broke the chair into pieces. Then he told the dog to karate a
table, and the dog quickly broke the table in half. So the woman bought the
dog and took it home.

Her husband was disappointed and skeptical about the Scottie dog's abilities
as a guard dog.

The wife told him about the dog's excellent karate skills.

"Karate, my foot!" the husband yelled.

Now he believes his wife :o)

Nine year old Joey, was asked by his mother what he had learned in Sunday
school.

"Well, Mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a
rescue mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
When he got to the Red Sea, he had his engineers build a pontoon bridge and
all the people walked across safely. Then he used his walkie - talkie to
radio headquarters for reinforcements. They sent bombers to blow up the
bridge and all the Israelites were saved."

"Now, Joey, is that really what your teacher taught you?" his mother asked.

"Well, no, Mom. But if I told it the way the teacher did, you'd never
believe it!"

CAUTION: CHILDREN AT PRAY

It was another quiet Sunday in the cry room if there is such a thing.
The priest was delivering the sermon and Molly, my
two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter, asked if that man was talking
about Baby Jesus and I proudly said yes.

The highlight of the service was when the collection was about to be
taken in the cry room. I usually give Molly a dollar bill to put in
the wicker basket, when it is passed and she really enjoys doing that.

Today the usher opened the door and lowered the basket so that the
children could make their offering. That's when Joey, a little boy
about 2-3 years old, charged the collection basket. My thinking was
that little Joey's family gave him some money to deposit and he didn't
want to miss out.

When the basket reached Molly she smiled and whispered to me in her
sweet voice, "Cookies!"

I was browsing in a souvenir shop when the man next to me struck up a
conversation.

Just as he was telling me that his wife was getting carried away with her
shopping, a brief power shortage caused the lights to flicker overhead.

"Ah," he sighed, "that must be her checking out now."

A new hair salon opened up for business right across the street from the old
established hair cutters' place.

They put up a big bold sign which read:

"WE GIVE SEVEN DOLLAR HAIR CUTS!"

Not to be outdone, the old Master Barber put up his own sign:

"WE FIX SEVEN DOLLAR HAIR CUTS"
